Has anyone put a larger engine fan on their 110 isuzu? there is a fair gap between the fan and the shroud, it would work far better if this gap was smaller.

but unless your vehicle is running hot, what would be the point? bigger fan = more drag = less horsepower for turning the wheels...

maybe dave can chip in if there is a difference between 4bd1 and 4bd1t fan sizes in military use?

The reason the gap is there is because it can move around an alarming amount in some cases.

If cooling is a problem with the existing fan, there is a fault somewhere in the cooling system. I have used mine in sustained slow speed heavy pulling in the high forties, with the aircon going flat out, and maybe got as much as the width of the needle above its normal position. The big problem is getting up to running temperature, not lack of cooling - in winter I block most of the grille off, to try and get it to warm up quicker so the heater will work its feeble best.

no problem with running hot, i spose i just like to fiddle and try and make things work better. I'm toying with getting some spotlights, which means i'll be blocking part of my grill off, so to get better airflow a bigger fan is the easiest option. Motor does move, but i dont think its anywhere near half that much is it?

Anyone tried a viscous fan?, would this work?, I'd have concerns about the reliability/longevity and dust/water ingress of a thermo fan, but if a viscous fan fails, doesn't it seize.......and essentially becomes fixed anyway!. Wouldn't you get a couple of extra horses when it reaches temp and free-spools (for want of a better discription).........

Why? Never gets hot even in extreme conditions. Had mine off for a while to see what happened. I was thinking of replacing the engine driven fan with a couple of electric fans to reduce the noise level. Didn't get hot even in 40 degree heat in stop-start traffic.

I know, I know, I know, so why have a fan thats continually turning all the time.........that's my point!.

nope same fan.

Yep that engine can move on the mounts enough to let it hit the existing shroud... weve got a couple with rub marks in em at work.. NA's not turbos tho.

Its working DO NOT MESS WITH IT.....

if your county heater is being feeble increase the dose of your cooling system from the nominal 15-20% to 35-40 % after having the heater core flushed but watch for the temp rise... you can cook them up with the increased coolant mix ratios if you use it in summer or work it too hard.... excessively long warm up times are also a sign of your coolant dying IF your using the afloc, tec 50 or oat based coolants, assuming that you were at the upper end of your acceptable coolant concentration level.

also check that the blower motor is making full speed.

I went electric about 3 years ago. Noticable reduction in noise and vibration. But the rangie radiator shape works very well with a pair of electric fans (toyota corona I think), the landie radiators wont.

The fan on the turbo engine is different, it has a more swept appearance to the blades. Same size in diameter though.
I change the fans over when I did my conversion, but it was purly for selfish reasons though, and yes it still has that jynormass gap between the shroud.
I've contemplated thurmos, however I'm after ultra reliability so I ditched the electric idea.
I tow 5m + boats up here in the top end all the time, doing 100km/h in 36deg with 95% humidity, it dosn't get any tougher than that on your cooling system, and it runs at 82 deg all day.........it loves it:D

We fitted a viscous fan to our 4bd1 stage 1. Bought it off ebay as it was advertised as for fitting this engine. Had to have an adapter plate made to fit it. This meant we had to trim a tiny amount off the shroud. Freed up horsepower was negligable and it still ran at the same temp.

cheers

100km/h means your fan is just along for the ride. Towing the same boat up a hill with full throttle at 25km/h would be a much better test of how good the fan is.
