Hi All
I noticed on this U tube video that the Defenders have sling type looking rods from the roof to the front guards or the bonnet out of curiosity what purpose do they serve

I can't see the video at work but I suspect you are talking about limb-risers.
See http://inteli.com/limb-riser.html

the vid doesn't show too much of them, but my guess would be as brush or branch deflectors. similar devices are used on helicopters and ag aircraft to deflect cables into a cable cutter.

Dont bother putting them on! I fabricated some for a trip to Tassie cause I heard a lot of the tracks were overgrown, but they didnt really help....
All I got was a lot of comments from Patrol and LC owners as to whether they were to help hold on the bull bar! lol

Agree with everyone else, also note that I have heard that in some states they are illegal, presumably because of anticipated risk to pedestrians.

Got them as standard on the Camel 110... :D
If driving tracks that are heavilly overgrown, they are very useful...
If you're fitting your own, make sure you fit them to a roo bar rather than the front of the wing... The first decent branch will rip the mounting out of the ally.
