I'll start

This was taken last Thursday out at Cape Arnhem. Sand was like talc and as you can see by the pic the surf was starting to come up and so the fishing wasn't going to be good either (couldn't get near the rock shelf with out getting drenched :().

This is my favourite. Now I know it doesn't have a landrover in it, but it's at 80 mile beach in WA. So, our landrover had got us across the county which I think has to count for something.

Took it on Christmas day 05. It was about -2 deg at the time and there was a large snow storm on it's way, coming over the North Sea.

Where abouts on the York, nice stretch of beach.

In between Pt Rickaby and Pt Victoria. It was over Xmas/New Year break and over 3 days we saw about 4 other vehicles. Reminded me of the Greek Islands (not that I have been there but) with the amazing blue sea & sky.

You can drive for miles along the beaches there, and only a couple of hours from Adelaide.

Reads - What happened to that County in the hole at Coral Bay? How did it get that bad?

Load of blokes driving to a fishing spot on a beach that you not allowed to drive on . The landy sunk in the sand they spent all night keeping the water away from the car as it sank down and they called for help when it got serious as they ran out of beer. The ses turned up and the ses chap drove the landy straight out of the hole. But got hold of me as i had a landy and they worked out that the only thing to pull a land rover out is a land rover

yeh, seen a few cars bogged there,, funny stuff considering theres only 500m of beach and its no wider then 20m of sand at its widest part... Tashs family have a permanent van at seal rocks caravan park, we get up there a bit.

you can actualy get on some of the other beachs,, just gota find the right tracks ;)

Here's my one and only time on the Beach (Robe SA). Got bogged on my own. Left my Tirfor at home back in Melbourne, didn't think I'd need it since I had a winch on the front - wrong.

I wasn't having much fun trying to get out but my son had fun playing in the sand :)

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2007/09/154.jpg

Finally dug myself out and reversed out via the harder sand near the water. The D3 went into extended height mode once she got grounded.

Another victim for Elli Creek. Too easy to get stuck if they are not careful.

I was swimming in the creek with my missus late one arvo and did not notice the tide. By the time we tried to cross back north to Dundaburra campsite the tide was half in and dark.

I waded the crossing and found where the rocks were easiest to use for traction. Low second and we entered the water after watching the wave sets.

Off we went at a steady pace on an out going wave to avoid the salt water as much as we could and I spotted a school of fish swimming in front of the Defender in its headlights .

Strange sensation I will admit but we crossed easily.

The lens is the Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8 DX. Its a great fun lens to play with.

Until last month it was the only fisheye for an APS size sensor. Sigma have now brought out an equivalent and also a true circular fisheye for APS sized DSLR's.

Re DoE: I also think that society became concerned at the risk that candidates were being subjected to by inexperienced and untrained Leaders.

In NSW, we have had a number of avoidable deaths due to poor decisions by DoE Leaders.

For about 4 years I was a TAFE teacher for adventure leaders. Sometimes, students would approach, quoting their gold or silver quals. Unfortunately, I couldn't give them any exemptions, due to the variability in competence from school-to-school (& the quality of commercial operators in the scheme also varied dramatically).

Damn you've got nice beaches up there. No crowds!!!

shorty943
28th January 2008, 10:48 AM
I seem to get to beaches that require an even more off-road capable vehicle than the average 4WD.:(

There are some 400 islands scattered along the SA coast, and about 600 shipwrecks.:(

Althorpe Island has a lighthouse on it. It is west and slightly north of Kangaroo Island.
Haystack Island looks like an old haystack apparently, and is part of the Althorpe Group.

Reevesby Island, is a Cape Barren Goose breeding ground, and the home of the black, Island Tiger Snake.
Part of the Gambier Group of islands. Not far from Dangerous Reef.
"Jaws" was shot there in part, for the shark scenes.
The reef break can be seen from Reevesby's north shore.

There is a tiny little crescent shaped beach on the north shore of West Island that is pristine. Not even a footprint.
West Island is the bottom end of Thorny Passage. Near Wedge Island. So called because it is wedge shaped.
That's fun, navigating that stretch of water. Thorny Passage, I mean. Twisty and rocky.
Only a couple of miles to run behind the island, but. Well named, is Thorny Passage.

Refuge Cove, on Wilson's Promontory, is one of the prettiest little beaches I have ever seen.
Tree ferns down to the waters edge, a fresh water steam coming down into the bay, but you can only get in from the sea.
Sorry, no photo's of there, it were a dark and stormy 5 days , in a tall ship, in Bass Straight that trip.

And, I've got photo's from Frazer as well, it's just that I've never been there in a land based vehicle.

South Beach, Melville Island, Tiwi Islands, Northern Territory.

I took this shot when I was there helping build Tiwi College in January 08. I didn't have my own vehicle. This was one of the construction vehicles. There were Troopies and 4WD HiLux in addition to this Nissan. We went fishing, without a lot of success.
