Rainbow Beach - storm damage

I took a run out to Rainbow today to see how the beach has fared after the big seas and winds we've had recently.

Its really bad! A bit depressing actually. Probably the worst erosion I've seen in 20+ years. Where there is normally a small section of rocks about 50-100 m long which are normally traversable at low tide (and sometimes even at high tide) there are at least 2 km of rocks which are untrafficable even on a low, low tide as it was today (0.3m)

I know the sand comes back but its going to take a long time before the rocks are trafficable and it may never be the same again.

North of Rainbow and all the way up to Inskip Point, there are vertical sand cliffs 4-5m high.

If you're heading up to Fraser Island, I would recommend taking the highway through Gympie and not going up the beach from Noosa........

Actually now is suppose to be one of the better times to see Rainbow beach - after a storm or strong winds when it rips all the shrubs and folliage away so you can really see the rainbow colours.

As for the erosion.. oh well that happens, been happening that way there for centuries. Things change, such is life...

Just think...all that sand is headed south to languish on the truly beautiful NSW beaches :D:D:D

If that is where it is headed then it is pretty much just going home.

It will regenerate I was there way back in 1966 and 1968there were some very bad erosion. The crew was still on the Cherry Venture. Again in 1974 the erosion was very bad within a few months it starts to regenerate.

The only problem is the extra erosion caused by vehicles heading up into the dunes to get around the rocks.

Back in the mid eightys I used to have a job reading the electricity meters at Tin Can Bay,Rainbow beach and surrounding rural areas. I used to drive a little suzuki siera up the beach most days from Noosa to work. Eventualy someone questioned my petty cash reciepts for the barge.

I explained the time and fuel saved and it was forgotten I pity the guy who bought that Suzuki though she would have been prety rusty in a couple of years.

What a great job that was Its a pity they offered voulantry redundantcy.
