Tyres for Series Ones'

Hi there

There is alot of tyre brands on the marked these days - what is a good brand/tyre to suit the old S1 (1958 LWB).

I want a good handling/strength tyre - as the S1 Fire Engine is heavy - but also want something with close to original tread etc.

With the amount of SI restored these days is anyone able to help - pictures - price - availablilty etc......

G'day ellard, I went looking for some 16/600 Olympic or dunlop bar treads but they arnt produced. There was a korean mob who did bar treads 'kumo' maybee. $130 a tyre. That was 4 years ago.

The fire engine probably did not originally have bar treads. These were rarely fitted to civilian Landrovers except in very early ones (and mostly these were directional bar treads from the photos I have). Most were fitted with RTM or similar treads.

By coincidence the Steeltrek is a quite similar looking tread, and I would suggest these. They are also a very heavy duty tyre, suited to the heavy weight, and are a radial tyre - and when I changed my 2a from cross plies to radials the handling notably improved both on and off road, although the Steeltreks I have on at the moment do not handle quite as well as did the Michelins I had before them, but are still better than the cross ply bar treads.

I believe a mate of Wayne has found a dealer with supplies of Dunlop Road Track Major (RTM as you say) in 7.00 16 there are also a Chinese brand Triangle who have a lug pattern in 7.00 16.

The MRF brand from India do supply non-directional bar treads but as you say not what would have been fitted to a fire engine.

Do you know when RTM first appeared on the market? They were original fitting to S2/S2a Land Rovers from new but am not sure when they would have replaced the Dunlop Trak Grip T28 pattern or the Olympic bar treads fitted on Aussie CKD Land Rovers from about 1950.

The Dunlop/Olympic Road Track Major is still available in Qld, and the 600 X 16 Bar treads are still available as the Jeep Club has access to them, I will be going to the Caboolture Historic Village on Sunday with some of the Jeep Club boys so I will find out as to Price/Availability :) Most of the Australian CKD Landrovers were fitted with Dunlop Road Track Majors in 700 X 16 and 750 X 16 sizes, as part of the "Australian Content" or Goodyear Custom Hi-Milers.

Do you know when the change to RTM from Olympic Bar treads happened happened? I know that the bar treads were standard fitting on the 1950 51 models but nothing after.

Just poking about on tyres4u I found these advance tyres, a MB 223 which appear to be the same as a RTM unless i'm mistaken.

Unfortunately only in 7.50 16 not the other smaller sizes standard for the 107" S1's like 7.00 16.

I think that from the 60's there was a choice of tyre fittment at different dealers, remember if it was a country dealer that had a vehicle (anymake) on the showroom floor, he had to buy that vehicle first, so it would have come as the dealer ordered, there was at least 3 that I know of, Bartreads, Road Track Majors, Custom Hi Milers, and I have a A& T service letter here refering to B. F Goodrich suppling tyres in 7.50 x16 for 109's and that Michelin X tyres were fitted to all Dept of Works vehicles sold and delivered through them and that the wheel alignment was to be adjusted for the Radial tyres to ZERO Toe-In ;) 11/3/65 :)

So that's where those letters to the dealers that I got yesterday came from ;)

I didn't realise that the S2 came in the 700 tyres, but my knowledge sorta begins form the S2 :blush:

Bobslandies has "0" camber for running radials on his S2a 109.

This was done by machining the outer face of the swivel housing something like 1 degree. The stub axles still bolt on using the original bolts which are slightly angled. I haven't driven his beast but the steering is said to be very light.

I've been looking for tyres for my Series 1 and have found a Firestone LT in 7.00 x 16 http://www.bridgestone.com.au/tyres/products/car/treads/ut2000.asp
First quote was $200each (fitted, balanced and new tube) but I'll shop around.
Any comments as to suitability.......

I have spoken to the local Dunlop dealer (Pt Augusta) - and you can still buy the original 700 x 16 road track majors.

With prices from 3 seperate dealers - they range from $130 - $150 each.

Thanks Wayne, there are only two usable tyres on the car and one is a Dunlop Roadtrak Major.

I'll ring around and see if I can get a set of four.
