Im Looking around for a new lawn mower, and Ive noted that almost all say that you must surply your own oil.......

I always thought that the shop owners had to sell a item Like a mower as a going consern?

Or am I living in the "good old days" :p

OH+S.

as they cant prove mode of transport and oil is considered hazardous cargo the mowers cant be moved with the oil boxed in them.

A good place will give you an initial service for free where it will be added for you at no charge. Unless its a 2 stroke in which case its consumable like the petrol

Do you mean as in oil for the sump in a 4-stroke? I've noticed this as well when walking past the shop in town that sells mowers. The all have a warning sticker on them telling you to fill them with oil before use.

As for mowers, pay the extra and get a Honda, will last a lot longer than any other.

Ok thanks dave, I thought that may be the case for transport but I thought they may at least give you the 500ml of oil to fill at home:angel:, but then again Ive got about 120L of 15-40 sitting in the shed ;)

Yeah sorry Derek, yes 4 stroke.:)

I would Like a honda, but we just need a second mower for this time of the year when the grass & weeds get to about 300-400mm high in the back yard and the poor old elec mower just cant handle it.......:(

As we are both shift workers (Well marie isnt anything at the moment) its very hard to get out there and do the back yard.....

Ive seen a GMC in the Mitre 10 cat tonight, Looks ok for $250.......I know its a toy, but what is a new Honda worth ? Im guesing around the $800-$900 mark :o, but worth it I know ;), but not needed by us ;)

When I bought a new mower with Briggs and Stratton 4 stroke engine last year it was supplied dry with warning signs taped everywhere stating to fill it first:D, and included a Briggs and Stratton brand running in oil.

Just a tip, let the grass get really really long before using it for the first time. It needs to be at almost full throttle under decent load to bed in properly in the first 10 hours. Then I dumped the running in oil, filled it with Mobil Delvac 1 and its been tops ever since.

$3k delivered. I was pretty impressed the bloke came out, unloaded it and spent 30 minutes giving a induction.:D

Tells me when he's leaving that its a requirement by law these days.

Aren't we talking about mowers.

Don't you fill them with oil and then check/change at ten years. Get a new one at 20 years?????????:D:D:D:D:D:D

and here I was thinking I'd be the only dope silly enough to run synthetic oils in my Briggs powered gen set and Honda mower and brush cutter... :lol2:

Delvac 1 in the genny (it's nearly as old as me...) and currently 10W-30 M1 in the Honda's.

I ended up getting a GMC mower.....At $250 with 2yr warrenty and 4hp motor I cant go wrong for what I need it for (second mower for our feral backyard):D

Got it home put the handle on, straightend out the blades x4, put some oil & fuel in and it fired up first pull, but after I pulled the cord a few times to try and spread some oil around in the donk 1st

Here is what I got http://www.gmcompany.com.au/index.cfm'module=products&pid=632

Only differance is I got the 501, the link is for the 500, mine has a catcher and hence the body is differant ;) mine looks much better than the one in the link.....but you get the idea...

Interesting Rick,
however I was unaware that public liability insurance had to have an end user certificate.( last time I bought some it had no such requirement)
As the same would apply to almost anything that is motive or can be classed as a conveyance.

If that were the case public liability has no bearing on any legal requirements. ie acts of parliament ,anything enforceable.

I will stick to my original assumption , its frog spawn.

Rover will be soon be if they haven't started making them in China yet.

On the oil issue it depends where you buy the equipment. Places like Bunnings will not fill the unit with oil as they are not qualified to do so.

A mower shop will assemble and test the unit and provide a demo on how to run and maintain the unit. Yes you will pay more at a mower shop but how many mowers do we buy in our lifetime? I'm on my second in 27 years. This first one was second hand and the next was new in 1992.

You only get what you pay for these days. Service is rare.
