big plastic tub on roof rack

Hi all i am thinking of getting one of those big plastic boxes to put on the roof rack of the defender its a 02.
the boxes cost about 380 bucks not cheap. it will just be for trips away, im abit worried about it slowing me down heaps and using more fuel, is there a better way to stow some of my lighter stuff that, just seems fill the car up quickly. i think that at least i will be able to keep my camping gear in it at home. thanks all.

Have you considered building a hinged shelf into the rear roof space?

I did this for our recent Madigan Trip and it worked superbly. I was able to stow two self inflating mattresses rolled up with sleeping bags, a spare sleeping bag, a folded 18ft x 12ft poly tarp and a small dome tent all up in the otherwise unutilised roof space.
Access is easy by simply loosening two wing nuts and hinging the shelf down.

Combined with the false floor, it gave us a third level of loading without needing to worry about a) getting stuff up onto the roof and b)waterproofing the gear on the roof.

Hi Xtreme you have any pics i was thinking of welding somthing but thought be to heavy and hard to get off.but i love to stick weld Xtreme you have any pics and were you able to make it with out welding. thanks

Sorry no pics as I was a bit busy before trip and rolled vehicle a week after returning. Shelf was recovered from wrech though and is awaiting installation into replacement Defender.

I did need to do a bit of welding (brazing actually) to get the shelf the right size and to fabricate the hinges etc. Actual design would depend on whethwe you had a cargo barrier or not and where you could hinge from.

fatcat On my recent trip to the cape I had a TJM box,3 swags. portapot and a large bag on the roof. I got 11.5km per 100km which is about avg for my disco. The only down side is on a disco it makes for one tall vehicle..

I have my old army Steel trunk I use when going remote..Bolt it on No dramas and it can take a knock;)
I dont care much for aerodynamics , hell man I drive a brick:D:D

When I drove around Aust, I saw 4wds like yours everyday (And ALOT worse) .. if they had a small 4wd trailer, they would have been much safer at speeds, easier / lower for trees and more Airo,

Not having a go at your setup, but if I had to carry that much on the roof, it would have been a trailer ..

i have a big plastic box i use, they are great, definetely not water proof, but very very good for getting to the things you need regularly and quickly..

i have mine so it bolts on or off in under 10 minutes

again - best to take the wheels off - otherwise they'll leave dents in your roof...;)
