At the Expo at Penrith I got a new steering box for the 110. I have spent almost all day getting it out - finally managed it by loosening the RH front engine mount and jacking up the engine, which just enabled me to wriggle it out upwards.

Anyone else care to comment on how they have managed it?

Apart from this, the only problem was that for some of the bolts I thought I was going to break my 1/2" drive sockets - I was about to go next door to borrow their 3/4" drive sockets when they budged with two feet of pipe extending the bar.

I now need to clean up from all the leaked oil, and am planning to rebuild the reservoir. I need to get new hoses, I hope to be able to get my next door neighbour to get me some hose in town, otherwise I will have to do a trip in there in the 2a.

Also found while I am under the bonnet that the bracket for the aircleaner has broken - again. Already welded it twice, this one is in a different place, I'll have to pull it off to see just what is broken, but the LH strap round the aircleaner is not tightening. Should get the box back in tomorrow, but I doubt I'll get everything else done, and there is a meeting for half of Tuesday on fire planning, so I won't get back onto it until Tueday afternoon at best.

preheat the whole area for about 1 hr with a 2400w hot air gun then spray liberally with dieso or brake fluid...

go have a wash up and a drink break out the impact rated 1/2 inch drive socket set, rattle gun and the 4 foot breaker bar

abuse the pitman arm off being careful not to break the teeth on the output sector shaft or you might as well go get another vehicle to butcher

get the bolts out, leave 2 in by about 2 threads to hold it in place uncouple the main coloum shaft and remove that then its a game of tetris to wriggle it out once you remove the last 2 bolts. You should just be able to get it out without undoing the engine mount if you twist and turn it right. having a helper pry the engine over will make it easier. of course depending on the ancillaries and shrouding in your vehicle you might have a more entertaining time.

Thanks for the hints - there are a few problems with them though:

1. I've already got it out.

2. No way my power system would stand 24000w for an hour, although I suppose I could run the generator.

3. No helper available - nearest is 4km away and is away for the weekend anyway.

The biggest problem was what you so aptly name the Tetris game. The darn thing is heavy! And all done leaning in from above with the front jacked up (after trying from below). Also had a lot of trouble getting the steering shaft off - the slip joint didn't want to slip.

Now all I have to do is to juggle the new one in!

Think Dave meant 2400W!, I don't think there is an 'easy way' to do it, I undid the right engine mount, and you're right it is bl:o:ody heavy.....I bought a reconditioned four bolt that now has a seep:mad::mad::mad::mad: sometimes, you just can't win.......

2. I bought a reconditioned four bolt that now has a seep...

1. I meant that too - and I don't have enough power to run 2400w for an hour without running the generator.

2. That is why I jumped at the chance to get a NEW box on special at Penrith from All Four X 4. Being new, I would hope that sort of problem will not arise!

That's what I've been doing for the last few years - I found Lucas power steering conditioner has some beneficial effect, so you might try that.

Today I have got the new box in, and the mechanical bits connected up, but have not yet done the hydraulic bits, as I am refurbishing the tank. Nor have I put back sundry bits that had to come off to get at things, like the radiator header tank and the stop cable and cruise control cable.

The last box was done by a power steering specialist - at great expense. It has lasted about 200,000km or so.

I took it out through the bottom after I had removed the pump froim the engine.
There was no way that I could see to get it out from the top.
