I'm having some problems with the Subaru.
It's got a surge in acceleration. Goes like a slug until about 2500 revs and then takes off suddenly.
The revs that it happens at vary, and the amount that it takes off by varies too. I went out and put in a new fuel filter, 'cos that's what you do with a diesel,:p and it hasn't had a service since we bought it.
It's a 2.5 Outback, no turbo.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks
Simon

Does it do this only when a passenger is in the front?
Reason i ask is because our old Forester GT did similar, what i found was the main computer is under the passengers feet, i pulled it out and it must have had a loose plug, put it back in and never had a problem again.
Passenger must have had to much pressure on the cover plate over the computer.

Happens without passenger in front seat, but I'll check the computer plug, thanks.

so it will be the original outback with the with the Quad cam motor im guessing.
These were quite a responsive motor, for a subaru.
It sort of sounds like a mass air flow problem as i have seen a couple of cars behave like that from that vintage.
very hard to tell without driving it though. if its surging may be tps related too.
Ill keep thinking about it tomorrow and see if i can think of something else. Subarus have had very few sensor probs so ill see if anyone at work has suggestions too

I recall my old mans first outback did this, I think it turned out to be a bad program on the ECU. I think an upgrade at the dealer fixed it.

May i suggest if it's an auto i would have a look at the torque converter or just the auto in general. possible bands slipping etc. Are the revs matching actual speed?

It's a manual. Umm, how do I know if the revs match the actual speed?
Thanks

Not applicable to manual. Speed vs RPM...well not sure technically but once you've owned a car for a while, you'll know that when doing 60km/h, she might be sitting on 2100RPM. but if now she's on 2500RPM, then perhaps the engine is working harder to keep the speed up due to the lost power through slipping bands.

Good oh, thought you were talking about something much more technical.

From experience, subaru autos rarely give troubles. i would suggest you perhaps get a code check first, as it may brng up something easy like a maf sensor, and then you can go from there.
