I put the tank in the rear floor. its a manifold tank.
the reason for this was range. if i put it under the car id have to fit a sill tank of about 28l for petrol.
doing the sums.....
28l would get about 140ish kms
60 l gas under car tank would get 240/250 kms
so around 380 km all up
where as
normal 88 l tank bout 450km
55l manifold tank bout 230/240km
so all up 690ish km
would be a bit better for long trips etc, and was cheaper to fit too

A manifold tank takes up too much room. Get a vertical toroidal. See http://www.australianlpgwarehouse.com.au/icom.htm

Interesting links.
I too have thought about a conversion.
I have been looking at an idea of fitting two long range fuel tanks under the sills and replacing the existing fuel tank with an LPG one. The Disco's don't have a lot of cargo space, so I'm wondering if that idea would work.

I just had a scuba tank on the rear floor install done in my 94 Disco. I'll put some pics up when I get home.
My main reason was range too (balanced with cost). Sure you can get decent range with the underfloor system but it costs big dollars. When you add the cost of the two sill tanks on top of the $4500 (-$2000 rebate) install. This is based on it being fitted to a ~$6-7000 car.
I have pics from the weekend showing my fridge strapped down to the tanks with some foam in between as I haven't made my new storage cover yet

One thing that I was told about fitting tanks in that were not legal was issues with insurance. This is why im just forking out the dollars to make sure that its all legit and registered as an LPG vehicle. Last thing I want happen to me is that I hit someone, or someone hits me (their fault) and insurance wont cover me or the other drivers damages.

This is the best option giving both range and space, you get 70ltrs useable with twin tanks in place of the fuel tank ( approx. 350-400 k's) and fit 2 sill tanks giving you back the 80 + ltrs of petrol. I had this setup in 2 rangies and it worked well.

Terrific!
I was wondering if anyone had done that :)

Its more expensive this way but at least you keep your full boot space and have larger lpg/ fuel capacity.

I posted a couple of pix a while ago of my "scuba" tank installation in a '96 SI Disco. Go to http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread.php't=39922 for details.

I replaced my fuel tank with twin LPG tanks on my 97 Disco. I then fabricated a 35L replacemwnt tank that fits between the chassis and quarter panel on the RHS and also a 52L sill tank for the RHS. This way I still get my full petrol range (minus 1 or 2 litres) plus 70 litres of LPG. The conversion over here in Perth was $3800 5 months ago but we get an extra $1000 from the state gov so it only cost me $800 for the conversion which has paid for itself already. About the fuel tanks, they didn't cost me much because I was working for an accessory manufacturer at the time. But I can still get the tanks cheaper than retail. The 35L tank would probably be around $650 and the sill tank around $750 + transfer pump and freight. Don't know how that compares to other manufacturers but I know it's cheaper than OL retail. I have seen a few D1's with a single tank underneath but this, to me, seems to hang down too low. I don't have any pics of the LPG tanks in place but I can take some if you want me to, but here are some pics of the petrol tanks. Once I put my stainless silltank on the LHS for water storage, it will even up the payload aswell.

there is still plenty of room above it when a false floor is put in

I agree!!
I did this... It is a nice, simple and inexpensive way of getting LPG - Don't forget the more weight you carry with extra tanks, the more fuel you'll use (it is a petrol vehicle)!!!

I just kept the original 90 litre petrol tank and whacked the 62 litre usable tank inside the vehicle. Unfortunately my cargo drawer system had to go (it's still for sale! ;)) but I now have the same touring capacity on petrol and additional distance with LPG.
There are lots of places where LPG simply isn't available once you leave the beaten track, so I thought it wouldn't be wise to reduce my factory tank, just in case I have to go on a trip with the TD5 boys....
I reckon I have about the same touring distance as the TD5 boys, but only if they have the standard 90 litre factory tank.
I won't be able to follow the TD5 vehicles fitted with long range tanks. :(

I agree that a manifold tank is fine.
I made an MDF box to go over it and fitted a cargo barrier at the same time. On a trip across OZ I could fit all of the luggage for three adults and two kids in the back, by stacking it up to the roof. So much cheaper than anything else!

I have a manifold tank in the cargo area of my D2. Just put a false floor over it. It's only 280mm high so i just lifted my shelf up and lived happily ever after.
That spare wheel tankwould be the go for a rangey though. What a good idea.

I have an 88 liter tank behind the seats. its a bit of an issue with space and I only get about 250 - 260 k's from a tank of gas. pretty impressive someone getting the same from a 60 liter undercar set up.

steveo, that's pretty terrible mileage.
admittedly, mine are all highway km, but my 66lt underfloor tanks get 350-370km very consistantly.
Is yours very heavy and doing city driving?

thats pretty much around town. but probably only add about 10 - 20 k's for a straight run. i was pretty dissapointed with the mileage when i got the conversion done but the mechanic that done it said it was pretty normal. its an 80 liter tank but it takes about 65 liters at the pump when you consider that it fills only 80 percent and it doesnt idle very well on gas

still seems a bit short to me for 65 lt, But mine only does country runs so I don't know if that is right for stop start running.

not sure but i had a fairlane on gas was a 3.9 liter (same size engine but 6 cyls) that did about 400 k's for the same gas. don't know if being an 8 cyls would make it use more though
