Sometime ago I wrote to Landrover in South Africa enquiring as to wether my Series 3 was assembled there, today I get an email from them confirming it was built in South Africa however they dont keep actual details for that long, so at least thats one part of the puzzle sorted. They keep a record of chassis numbers only for the old stuff.

There's a nifty tool called CalVIN that can tell you about your Land Rovers.
Simply pop your VIN, serial or chassis number in, and it'll work its magic!

CalVIN from clifton has errors relating to some models - particularly the 1950's and the Forward Control's where it reports incorrect suffix and prefix information.
I use a Norwegian site: Classic Land Rovers http://www.classiclandrovers.com/?page=documents/vinlookup&

Those sites break down the codes to a certian degree but if the last letter of the chassis numberis an F then your knackered coz it means CKD off shore, can be either Oz or South Africa or anywhere else that screwed them together, I was overly curios as to her placeof birth, amazing what some sluething around does
