Completely of topic folks (sorry) but am wondering what to o about bank account/debit/credit cards whilst in Oz next year for 6-9 months.

My UK bank is part of the NAB group but they can not assist me with setting up a bank account in Oz as I am going for an extended holiday. They would be able to assist if I was emigrating!

I am prepared to deposit a reasonable sum of money to cover all my expenses whilst in Oz plus sufficient for most emergiencies. I dont want an overdraft but I do want to be able to withdraw cash etc as I travel around and pay for stuff with cards.

OK I could use my UK cards but I do not want to be hit with exchange rate charges etc. Also I have found out in my travels that not all countries/petrol stations except UK cards.

So can anyone give me advice on how to set up a bank account/debit card/credit card account for a non resident?

Regards

Brendan

Hi

When I set up my account I just went in to the local NAB with my passport, UK Drivers licence and an address of where I was staying. Cause I was only on a tourist visa that seemed to be enough, ie didn't need tot get the 100 points. I set up an online account.

With ref to depositing the large amount of money you can only bring over upto $10,000 in cash into Australia. I found it easier to bring over a couple of grand and then transfer the rest over form the UK. Got a better exchange rate doing that way too. Your UK bank will arrange this and it will take about 5 days.

I've never had problems using my cards here. Just have to select credit on the eftpos machines.

Whenever we travel overseas, we use either a debit card or in the days before them, we'd transfer money into one of our credit card accounts and use the credit card. That way we could draw down cash without incurring bank charges.

It's much easier today with debit cards - if you have a card on a major bank and not some obscure (in Australia) card. Even JCB can be a bit hard to use here.

Live on your visa card, recharge it from your main account via net banking

If you overseas Debit card has a Cirrus or Maestro logo on the card, you can use you overseas debit card in any overseas ATM machine to draw cash.
I used mine overseas and that way you only use your money, the exchange rate was better than traveller's cheques and credit card exchange rates.

Brendan

When we were over on holiday before moving here, we just walked into an ANZ branch and setup a normal bank account - doesn't matter that you're not resident. Commonwealth do the same, so I suspect it's like that for all the major high street banks. UK passport and driving license should be all you need.

One tip - if you want to transfer a lump sum over, or send regular funds, use someone like HiFX rather than the bank. No transfer fee, and much better rates.

How about US$15,000,000? (Why do people write the money symbol after the figure?)

Yeah, when I go overseas, I use my Visa and then use netbank to keep it topped up. You can also withdraw money from most ATMS with either Visa, or Cirrus (Mastercard) logos.

Just don't let your card out of your site (even in Australia).

I had read somewhere to get a Commonwealth Bank Account - as the Post Office can be used as a branch, most towns will have a Post Office

Hi mate ,
you can set up an account even before you physically arrive in Oz (such as we did), and put in some money beforehand. As soon as you arrive you will have to sign some papers, confirm your identity and can then access your money.
Plenty of banks to choose from.
Cheers

In this era of modern banking, i don;t know why you would have to start up a local account, just get an access card that has either visa or maestro on it, will work on atm's and you should be able to go into a bank as well to do a withdrawal.
thats all I do, have used my debit/with credit link all over europe, canada , the US and the falkland islands( teller withdrawals there) without any probs.
If your bank can;t offer you the service go somewhere else before you travel.

Cards certainly beat the old way, i still have my commonwealth bank passbook from the Aldwych branch in london.
