IMHO its a pain in the butt.
You will need to put it over pits to get a blue slip, where they may pick the oil leaks etc.
Have a look at the RTA site.Thye have it laid out.

Thats why a regod car in NSW is worth far more than one which has rego that has lapsed.

Once you've got your blue slip, there's not much to worry about.
Take your blue slip to your CTP insurer and get your green slip.
Then head over to the RTA. Fill in the rego form and when your number is called you show them the slips, your proof of acquisition (receipt from seller, or notice of disposal on the previous rego paper), some ID, pay them some money and you're usually good to go.

As above, once the blueslip is done it's pretty easy. I registered my XT ute that had lapsed by many years with a 351 and I only had to provide the engineers report to the dudes doing the blueslip and all was well. The RTA side is just paperwork these days, they rely on the blueslip to verify roadworthiness and the fact that the vehicle is not stolen, restamped etc.
