Silver cars have been found to be 10 per cent more likely to be involved in an accident than white cars, according to the Vehicle Colour Study to be released today by the Monash University Accident Research Centre.
Black vehicles are even more dangerous - with a 12 per cent higher crash risk than white cars - therefore, the latest car fashions could have disastrous consequences.

Wait until you drive through some **really** heavily overgrown roads like I did in the Rudall River NP. There was a dark blue Nissan on the trip with us and IMHO it's paint is simply a write off :o
Whereas the white on our fender... a bit of a clean up and she's apples :)

P.S. Ok I will admit that the black does tend to show up the scratches a little more, but hell I wear them with pride now, I am over the tears

My Series III is bright yellow and I swear it is invisible to some drivers! I even had a Brisbane City bus pull out in front of me the other day, I just managed to pull it up in time. My inlaws used to have a bright yellow car as well, it was hit six times, every time it was stationary! Work that one out.

I had a commodore company car a few years ago that was "tungsten" a light metallic gold and I reckon it was even more invisible than than it' silver predecessor.

Yep, you can't tell if they are dirty though.
I love dark silvers but I refuse to buy one - ever. Buying a car the same colour as the road is just a really stupid idea IMHO. Even if it's the most beautiful thing.. its still a really stupid idea IMHO. :wasntme:

Yep! I love it too. At least a defender is pretty big. That's got to help. The visibility issues can be bypassed by running daytime running lights.
A friend of mine drove from Laidley to Brisbane each day. She got herself a dark silver Honda Civic and noticed that everyone kept trying to overtake while she was there. Eventually she worked it out and just ran with her lights on after that. :)
It's all pointless though. After our last trip a dark colour would have needed a complete re-spray.

coloured vehicles are way nicer to look at but white ones on the other hand are just so much more practical.
had black, maroon, green, yellow and a host of others over the years but the white / cream ones tend to stay with me longer when i think back on it...

If all cars had daytime running lights (a la Volvos) then it wouldn't matter what colour your car was.
We always drive with our headlights on out in the country, but not in the city.

Agree 100%, white is more practical, doesnt show up the scratches as much, but at the end of the day, I would still prefer my road coloured car :2up::tease:and fall under the guidelines of stupid :p

I think Stevos black jobbie looks excellent.
Maybe, those who can't see other cars (of any colour) shouldn't drive.
I had a custom Ford Transit van years ago, which was black and white. That'll confuse the statisticians....

Here's a pic of the duco destroying rubbish we were driving through. They don't do it justice though. It's easy to say "I don't drive through that" but when you're presented with it you've got an interesting problem.
As you drive into it you initially think "yuk".. this won't be like this for long. Then after an hour or so you think... "Maybe I should turn back"... but then you've got a whole group of people with you... and then you know you've got definitely an hour of it back the way you came, and then another 5 days going out the way you came in.
When you're there it's a very hard call. Fortunately we don't need a re-spray like some of the other cars that were with us :o One gent with a 110 ute had it rub through the canvas around the frame :(

mate in the far north of s.a., the name we use to refer to dark coloured 4wds is not very nice!!! they are not...practical in our heat...
its a bit like the "wankerlights" they are fitted by people across the roofline usually in groups of 5 or more and are used to speciffically bwarn you that the owner is a ........anyway Im sure you get the idea....
its like the britz campers...in summer we refer to them as FRITZ IN A BRITZ as only german nand swedish tourists generally have them then!
but in the end its a matter of "whatever floats your boat!"

We always drive with our headlights on out in the country, but not in the city.
It perhaps would not matter from the visibility point of view, but turning the lights on does nothing for the interior temperature. It is OK to say "I've got airconditioning" but unless you have remote start (illegal in this country) and can run it for a few minutes to cool the car down, the dark coloured car will still be a lot hotter when you return to it, although here the roof is the important part. Almost fifty years ago my father got the roof of his grey Vedette repainted off white - and it reduced the temperature while parked in the sun by a measured 10F, and that was in Sydney, not inland, and a grey car, not black! There is a good reason why until fairly recently almost all Series/110/Defender Landrovers sold here had near-white roofs. In recent years as the target market has moved from utility to "lifestyle", this seems to have been dropped.

Might be boring but so pratical in so many ways. Looks great after a wash. Looks tough with black bar work.
How couldn't you love white!

I have to agre with you on that one, bright yellow on a Series land rover seems to attract cars like Bees to a honey pot. The number of times i have had people try to merge into me  I particularly hate the ones that cut infront then jam on the brakes

My Disco1 is dark grey (forget its name). I wanted a white one but they were proving very difficult to find and this one was great in every other aspect.
In Qld the heat that builds up in the cabin is shocking. I tend to leave the windows down a bit which helps a lot but not as good as the white rodeo I had before. Wreaks havoc with the fridge and therefore the second battery life.
Plus as has been said its scratches show up a mile away but my white Rodeo looked great even though it was scratched and dented all over.
Maybe I'll spray it white when the paint starts to peel.

When the time comes and SWMBO lets me, I would love to park a black fender next to the D3. When I was looking at selling the D3, I was on the hunt for a black Extreme. Also like the Gun Metal Grey, like Numpty's, that would be my second choice.

Years ago it use to be red for a while.
It all depends on the terms of reference. If I was to say go and sit on Logan RD at Stones Corner between the hours of 0330 and 0430 I can quite categorically say its orange!
