Cop this: It is hard to be intelligent and have no cargo barrier at the same time.

Don't like that statement? Stiff!

I cannot understand the philosophy of fitting "looks good" gear - and not the life-saving gear.

My cargo barrier saved my life - and God it is good to type this right now - talk to someone who has had a rollover - they didn't plan it, expect it or think it would be as traumatic - ask them their opinion of a cargo barrier.

Fit the damn thing.

I tossed up fitting a Cargo barrier, but ended up with a 4point cage in the back of my Disco (knowing me, I'll probably do something dumb one day :D)

Funny thing was the cage was much cheaper than what the cargo barrier was going to cost.

Added security & functionality.

Dave.

Sorry but when I read this quote - I got a totally different meaning judging from your reaction/post

It is hard to be intelligent and have no cargo barrier at the same time.

The way I read it was - reversed for clarity - if you don't have a cargo barrier you are not being very inteligent

or

Reversed grammar

It's easy to be inteligent when you have a cargo barrier

Or am I missing something................................. again

do you have to get roll cages engineered to be legal or can you just fit what you like as long as it doesn't cause an accident?

All states regs are different.

Mine complies but for all intensive purposes it is a 'Cargo Barrier'

Thanks Ladas - now you have got me confused:confused:

Thinking like that probably means you have too much time on your hands - and I should not be making such big statements at one minute to midnight!!

You've been there, done that..... you know it is basically stupid to have all the camping gear loaded - and have no restraint system, whether a cargo barrier, cage or at least lashed down.;)

Ahhhhh so it's just a REALLY REALLY strong cargo barrier ;)

I'll have to remember that

I've fitted and removed my cargo barrier 3 times. Does that make me 3 times as smart as others or do the removals cancel the fittings?

Currently it is not fitted as it needs modification to fit with the LPG manifold tank.

Too right it does;)

I agree, having a cargo barrier in a station wagon style vehicle should be mandatory, unless of course you don't carry ANYTHING in the back at all.:D

My father-in-law believes that the cargo blind (in his subaru) will restrain any luggage in the back so there is no need for a cargo barrier. No amount of discussion will convince him that in a crash, if the blind does manage to restain any vertical luggage movement, any heavy object will probably just flatten the rear seats anyway (as the seat backs are not designed as load restraints).

Unfortunately I must disagree with you there - If it was mandatory, then it would turn the back of the 'fender into a paddy wagon! :nazilock:
And it wouldn't look particularly good to the parents when I'm bussing half a scout troop around, either. :o

But yes, I agree with the general sentiment of keeping everything properly secured.

As far as I know it is illegal to sit behind a cargo barrier.

So if you use your very back row seats (6 or 7 seater etc) then you would have to remove the barrier each time.

If you have a Disco1 a cargo barrier is pretty much mandatory anyway since most of the packing room is vertical as it is such a shallow cargo area.

I agree with the initial statement (or Ladas's correction of said statment) though Im still waiting on one to come up at a reasonable price which I can fit and still fit my fridge in.

Im considering building my own as Im not a fan of the mounting style of the ones Ive seen but I need to check the legalities before I build my own.

Would you like to give details of how yours saved you?

Just to add to the others comments. My wife and I are still alive because I had one fitted to my first Disco when it rolled. I also think it should be mandatory in any 4WD or station wagon. Safety isn't about looks.

I have had a cargo in my Defender since almost new and although I don't believe they should be mandatory, I like the idea that it might protect us.

I would like to make it more easily removeable as sometimes I want to sleep in the back but cannot without hours removing it. On some new ones they have a door which might make it easier.

It never happened without pics - and I have to move this old fella into the 21st century very soon and come to terms with technology - aka getting pics onto this site.

Basically, rolled 500m past Thredbo on the way to Jindabyne - the back was full of camping boxes - 3 rolls and camping boxes and no cargo barrier = trouble.

But... the cargo barrier acted as a roll bar - they are damned strong - but we need the pictures to show this.

I'm off to the NT on Friday so no hope of Barra1 and technology comprising before then - but in two weeks time........ let's pray and pictures will be forthcoming.

Not at the moment - I don't have access to my camera.

I'll see what I can do.

When I go camping (short trips) I sleep in the back of my defender .... there is no way to do this with a cargo barrier ...

I am thinking of making a fold down one, so at night I can just fold it down, over the back seats and it will be the base of the bed .... I need to learn to weld first thou..

I think we have one under the house somewhere - but its not practical as I usually have the seats folded forwards for ease of getting the mountain bikes in the back, or the sailboarding equipment in. The old 2 door actually fitted the sailboarding gear easier than the 4 door.

In the 110 CSW I have a LR dog guard not a cargo barrier. It is worth its weight in gold. Besides providing an extra storage facility it works as a cargo barrier.

Anything in the middle section of the 110 is either soft, pillows sleeping bags etc, anything hard is well lashed down in the middle.

In the back most things are normally well secured and in the event of things going tits up there is the barrier. It does work well as a cargo barrier as I proved when crossing a ditch at over 80kmh!

Cost of dog guard was £65 or about AUS$150

I remember this post by DM_td5 a while back on barriers.

Cargo - crash barrier (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showpost.php?p=499501&postcount=5)

It's a pretty graphic illustration of why you should have one. Our cargo barrier was the second option after the child restraints.

I had one of those DOG barriers in my 1976 Rangie. Even that saved us a headache in a head-on along the glow worm tunnel road. The gear was embedded in the barrier and it was almost torn off but it stopped me getting a tool box through the back of my head.

All my landies have them now.

I reckon cargo barriers should be mandatory for most wagons. Exceptions being additional seating eg 7 seaters, as long as anything loaded is not of sufficient weight to cause injury or is anchored down with an approed restraint device.
There hae been to many fatalities and injuries due to to cargo / luggage coming forward into the cab and usually the first heads to get hit are the kids. Being inconveinient or not asthetically pleasing is not a reason to not have one. Most are adjustable or easily remoed when needed.

I have two dogs in the back of the disco a lot, I know i wouldn't want them hitting me in the head in a accident !!

Go the cargo barrier, best $100 on ebay I have spent :)
