Does anyone know anything about the Landtiger - a Chinese 4wd. Yes this is Landrover related.

At lunch today I was talking to a friend who is chinese about cars he owns back in Beijing. He said he had a jeep and when I said - what a wrangler, he said no a lot better - a Landtiger. In China the general term for a 4wd is jeep.

My interest lifted as I understood that the Landtiger was a Chinese Landrover - most likely a Discovery equivalent. When I asked if it had a stepped roof he said yes and a petrol V8. He said it was 3 years old and when I showed him a picture of a D2 he said it similar but looked better - his car has alpine windows. I showed him a D3 and said it was different.

We googled Landtiger and drew a blank so he went to the chinese google homepage and when Landtiger was googled, it went straight to the Chinese Landrover Home page with the standard Landy models but no Landtiger version.

So does anyone know how the Landtiger fits in with Landrover - is it just a Chinese clone or a genuine landrover product for the Chinese market. Anyone got some pics. My friend is going home next week so I have asked him to send me some photos.

I've heard of a LandWind 4wd. Ateco (the Australian importer who manage Fiat, Citroen, Alfa etc.) are considering bringing them to Australia when the NCAP rating has improved.

China for the last 20 years, have been making a 4WD called Jiangling Landwind. There is a model called Paper Tiger. It is curently one of the most dangerous vehicles on the road :)

The Disco 1 was rebadge in Japan for a while as the Honda Crossroad (there was an article about them in LRE) so it's possible that there was something else happening in China too.

A dip into the well of Wikipedia suggests that it is basically a 1990s Rodeo.

There appear to be some suggestions that the pictured test results were made deliberately using a test it was not required to pass as a defence by a German industry trying to pre-empt the loss of market share from cheaper imports. As it is apparently sold in Europe it presumably meets all current European standards; which is not, of course, mean that it is as safe as some competitors.

Of course, in our context I hardly need point out that statistically the Defender is one of the safest cars sold in the UK - while having few of the safety devices used to measure "safety".

Definitely a Landtiger not Land Wind - has a stepped roof, alpine windows and a petrol V8 ceratinly selling new in the last couple of years. As I said when he typed in Landtiger on the chinese google website it went straight to the Chinese Landrover home page.

That looks like a Isuzu Wizard ( sold here by GM as the Holden Frontera between 1999-2003 or so)
I know cause I had one --not a bad car but ground clearance sucks.

Interesting!
According to the Chinese list of vehicle manufacturers, there is no such vehicle.

Perhaps the Chinese characters used for the the Land Rover brand translate to land tiger.

They tend to re-name things with meaningful nicknames when translating into Chinese characters.

Nokia 8110 - ziu zai (Little Banana)
Motorola Startac - gwai (Turtle)
Nokia 5210 - sam fon hap (3-way guard/master)
Motorola V70 - mo lun dzoen (Magical wheel)
Samsung Queen Phone - nui hon fo (Female trendy Korean)

Well that is interesting :D

But the Chinese guy says his is a V8 petrol and is 3 years old (too old for the LR2) - he knows my Freelander as he been in it about 20 times so it is not the earlier model.

Any way he goes back to Beijing next week and I have asked him to send me a picture.

I have a theory, and I may well be wrong and it would not be the first time:)

As most of you know, the Chinese have a real problem with the pronunciation of certain english words and letters. "R" is a bad one, "Flied Lice" is common.

One evening when I was doing my Justice of the Peace Exam, I called in for a quick take away at a small Chinese shop. After I picked up the meal this guy says, "You want fok?", I said sorry I don't have time, he starts do animations of feeding the mouth and the penny dropped:)

I said you mean "Fork?" he says yes, yes.

I said, "No the spoon is fine, thank you".

So after that long winded story, Land Rover would come out as "Land Loaver", and I guess they though Langtiger would be a hell of a lot easier to say:D

I'd be thinking that if it were V8 then it would have to be a Disco but then again if he said it wasnt a D3 then it must be more than 3yo unless they have done the normal thing that the Chinese and Koreans do these days and buy the previous model dies etc and start making the cars them selves so then it could be a similar to a D2 or even a D1.

Proton's first cars to come to OZ was pretty much the previous model Mitsubishi Lancer/Mirage (or that sort of model) I dont know much about them anymore though.

Daedong (Kioti) were a drive train suplier to Kubota and now pump out near purfect copies of the Kubota product, some of them are even better than the original in some ways.

There is also a Chinese company building direct copies of Kubota tractor models from the late 80's.

So why not Landrovers, Santana did it.
