Talking to herself's bro and partner, over from WA. They were telling us about a friend of theirs who has a brand spankers D3. Seems he's a bit of a sanger short of a picnic ... it's a TDV6 and he gave it a nice big drink of ULP.... :o

Apparently when he approached his insurers, the wee lassie to which he spoke used all her possible tact in explaining to him there's a fine line between an accident and stupidity .... :eek2::imwithstupid::censored:

I guess some ppls don't deserve a landie.:nazilock:

Yowww - that's going to cost him some big biccies.

Wouldn't it be good if petrol fillers were round and diesel fillers square (or something).........

Evidently it's cheap to fix as long as you notice before you turn the key to II.

If you turn the key:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Funnily enough it's so common in Europe was one of the first bulletins for the D3 that LR put out.

My dear old mum did a similar thing to dads new valiant in 1980, filled it with diesel, it didnt like it ! though easier to fix I suspect to adding ULP to a Disco Diesel.

I think I read somewhere that they are looking at putting some systems in place to check the fuel and stop them starting with ulp :o

thats why the pumps are colour coded
thats why they have stickers on the inside of the fuel filler flap saying diesel only etc
thats why you never lend your car to the wife
thats why people with money never worry

I would be changing my insurance company straight away if they wouldn't cover that.

Given that most crashes (not accidents, I hate that term) are caused by stupidity, they should cover it. I have heard of that situation being covered (had an assessor here looking at a vehicle with the same circumstances).

You'd only end up with a bunch of bent and squared off petrol nozzles:p:p

That's what I would have thought. My insurer covers it.

i have found in some servo's that you have to lift the flap up before getting the nozzle out {warning diesel fuel written on flap),good idea ,but of course you are still relying on people reading the warning!;)

Yep, but you don't need to lift the flap on the unleaded filler to fill your diesel vehicle with petrol do you

No where near as dramatic but the trainee at work put 21ltrs of ulp in a 35ltr tank of our greens mower which has a Kubota Diesel in it.

After getting about 1/3rd around the cut it konked it on the edge of a green in which I opened the cap I smelt the petrol and he started running.

I dragged it back off the surround into the long rough and drained the tank into trays and put a jerry of diesel in it while explaining what was happening to about 40 members.

After priming about 10 ltrs through it to try and limit anymore petrol from the system I started it and the only damage was it needed a tappet adjustment so far.

It only has diesel written on the machine next to the filler, and on the cap and the pumps are bright yellow for petrol and green for diesel which is also very clearly marked and 2m apart.

He also had had to read the operators manual before being signed off on using the machine and had been clearly told by myself and the OH&S officer that it was a diesel.

Stupidity comes in all shapes and sizes.

this isnt a realy problem in old school mechanical injected engines...

the new stuff with the extra high pressure injectors however...

(shudder)

its a bit like running an F1 engine without oil...

Have only had it happen once, in reverse though, dopey wife, i can say that!!
who had been driving the pajero regularly(diesel) went shopping one day and took the toyota (petrol) decided to fill the toyota, 30 litres of diesel, it got 2 k's from the shops. Smoking bably and stopped,
tank drained, new filters etc problem fixed.

some people just work in auto mode at servo's
getting what they always get, not reading and so on, so all the signs in the world are not going to make any diference.

It's not a problem for me as I always fill our fender. There is something about the sense of occasion for me that I can't see how I could manage to muck it up. :o

We've had a few of these mis-fuels go through here, all through insurance.

Some of the new Land Rover models have a system to cut off the fuel to the tank when it detects the wrong fuel (might be the Freelander ?).

I hope so cause I don't quite trust myself yet. Each time I squeeze the trigger I get panic attacks!

Apparently the new Mondeo has a system to stop you accidentally putting a petrol nozzle in the diesel.
