The 80 series beat me by about 3 mins over the two days so it was close racing. Pity about our flat tyre otherwise we may have got there

Now THAT got the heart kickstarted.
That 80series goes pretty hard, am I guessing Rodec, Donovan or BB?
The only thing missing was some audio of your rig Discokid.
Nothing like the sweeet sound of a small block at 7K...:cool::cool:
Makes me want to go racing....:D:D

Off road racing is nuts your ute is just awesome!
Looks like it jumps pretty good for a LR - what shocks are you running? Remote res?

:D:D That IS a disaster!
I remember the whole 1992 Safari we had NO vehicle damage at all except the odd small dent etc and sagging rear suspension, UNTIL we got to the Mindil beach sprint in Darwin, when after launching off the fininsh line mound, we bent the front diff, broke the screen and bent the front shaft after it hit the 727's oil pan.
We drove back to perth from Darwin in 2wd and chopped the front tyres down to the cords!
BUT WE GOT THERE!!!

Hi Guys
Thanks for the comments
The "plough impersonation" was so I didnt end up like that buggy. I braked and skidded across the jump and released the brake just before hitting the peak to so it landed quite calmly
The 80s has a 6.0lt LS2 in it with all the fruit. Its sounds and goes well. I think once he has it sorted it should in theory be quicker than mine but speed isnt everything in off road. Im sure he will have plently on entertainment with the standard landcrusiuer box once he gets it going
In term of shocks Im still just running the tough dog adjustables (2 per corner). They have served me well for 4 years and Ive just replaced them with another set after the Aust Safari. Im looking to upgrade but cant find enough info about King, Fox etc in landrovers specifically. I want to be fully informed before shelling out the kind of cash there asking for
In the off season Ill hunt for more power out of the LS1 with Cam,Heads etc. But she is going well and is fast earning the repuation as being one of the more relaible racers in WA
The off season should bring plently of weekends up at Lancelin and the like

Just some small things, Before you try for more power, see if there is any areas you can remove weight. This will get your power to weight ratio up, without the potential for breakages and spending huge $$$. When Pete and I did the Safari, we used a bog stock 3.5 Hi comp engine, 727 and 1.2 transfer, the vehicle went well because it weighed 1600kg with the rollcage installled.
And Shocks, 2 per corner is the absolute minimum for that event.
We were after reliability, after all, Darwin was a loonng way from Sydney!
AND we didn't hurt the drive train at all, we could drive it to valve float an belt the 727 into gear with the B&M quick click all day, and not worry.
Wish I was younger and able to spare the time!!!!
Damn. Now I'll have to think about building something...:(

Justin
I like the idea of lightening things up. Its just everytime I look I think I need it or it will wreck the vehicle if I remove it. The landy is still street registered ( and legal) and needs to stay that way so I cant remove headlights and the like. It weighs in at 1920kg at the moment with 120lt of fuel so its not light but not that heavy either. Most of the weight is in the chassis by the looks of it and roll bar so I wasnt inclined to remove roof linings, door trim etc to only save a few kilos. Point taken though

Any form of bypass shock (King, FOx, FOA, Bilstien, Radflow) will transform your car.
We fitted kings to my mates GQ which we raced in winch challenges and it was a completely different car once the shocks where fitted - even better when the shocks where tuned.
It used to run twin custom Koni's all round, and the bypass shocks made it handle like it was on rails.
Rohan Canavan is the man for this sort of stuff, he is also into a lot of off road racing style events.
He could offer a lot of advice for valving ect, he is also the Aust King distributer, and will valve shocks to suit - pity he is in Vic though.
Just do it - you won't regret it.

Only thing 80 series about that was the body shell...
Loved the red landy ute and the white rangie looked familiar too....lots of "land Crabs" my name for buggy hybrids...

Thanks guys
The 80series is running a standard gearbox, transfer case and rear diff
The front diff is a mix of nissan and toyota
Does anybody have any useful info regarding bypass shocks on land rovers?? I have spoken to Rohan (he was over here for an event) there are lots of people that will sell you the shocks even locally but from what Ive seen setting them up is an art in themselves and if they arent set up properly they are probably worse than what Ive got now
