G'day alll,

Would like to look at putting some whirlybirds on our roof but as our house is has Asbestos roof tiles was wondering if anyone knows a company in Brisbane who can do it?

I've called a few and the ones that deal with Asbestos don't seem that interested in such a small job as installing a whirlybird - and as my father passed on from Asbestosis it's not something I particularly want to even consider attempting myself....

ooohh, thats a job nobody would want to touch unless you have a lot of money, considering the protective gear and so on, plus the likelyhood of dust escaping into the roof cavity.

as a suggestion if you have gable ends on your house,

why not put in some of the larger decorative vents,

the photos should come through

what that does is give you a flow through effect, you can even beef then up by putting in an exhaust fan( on one end only) plus put in the eave vents.

I run out and take a photo of mine so you know what i mean.

Or even, think outside the square and put the roof ventilators onto a vertical surface, the only prob would be to get the height and angle up to the ridge. A/C ducting perhaps?? its Do able.
save touching the asbestos.

here gable end,

my major problem is the skillion roof at the back, but I have 7 eave ventilators in across the back veranda , working on the hot air rises principle, up to two roof ventilators, I was initially going to put in gable vents, as the other side faces the south, ( ocean side) and the cooler breeze always comes up the valley.but the spinners do the job well

I think you will find that it is illegal to cut holes into the asbestos. I had a garage roof that was asbestos and a small tree branch punched a hole in it. I was told by the insurance assesor that they would repair it, I just smiled and walked away. Next day I got a call from the assesor to say that they were not allowed to repair, replace or interfir with the asbestos unless it was to remove it which they did and I got a nice new tin roof.

Asbestos products are reasonably stable unless broken or cut. Then they're dangerous.

Best saving up and replacing the roof.

Hose them down and DON'T break them, asbestos is pretty tough stuff, but unless your planning on spending mega bucks, do it yourself or don't do it at all:(

It will be difficult to find someone as no-one will want to mess with aspestos for such a small job, as you discovered.

Aspestos is a good roof (we have one) but you don't want to cut it, drill it or disturb it in anyway or it becomes dangerous. As an alternative to the whirybird, perhaps think about putting eve vents in to help ventilate ceiling space provided they aren't also aspestos.

............& are safer when wet.

Not good to be on them when they are wet though - it's substantially weaker.

As well as slippery, but I would envisage anyone contemplating movement on a a roof, would know where to walk & take the appropriate precautions.

Hhhhmmmmm, maybe not.:D
