Well, we got 10mm overnight in two thunderstorms - the first just after I went to bed, the second around 4.30am - consequently feeling rather grumpy this morning.
This is the highest rainfall in a single fall since June, and a total of 38mm in the last four months - nothing to write home about. The 10mm will hardly lay the dust for more than a day.

Just started to rain here John, but don't expect to get much. A number of severe storms have moved/are moving through Ipswich and Brisbane with occasional heavy falls. Some places are copping it and others not.

They keep forecasting that the next event will be the one with rain in it - and this has been the case for the last four months - we get rain OK: 0.5, 1.5, 4, 2.5, 0.5, 8, 0.5, 5.5, 0.5, 4.5, 0.5, 10mm - that is all our registrations for the last four months, during which time there was going to be "significant rainfall" at least half a dozen times. I'm afraid that I have to conclude that the forecasters are optimists.

19 mm overnight and 2.5 mm today:Dthat makes 41.5 mm in the last 2 days :D the tanks nearly full:DMust be a very small tank!
Not that it is as important as the people out west, however I have a 4,400litre tank in the backyard, used for washing the clothes, washing the car, filling the spar and watering the lawn. Anyway a couple of weeks ago the temporary overflow device to direct the water into the sump to be pumped out to the storm-water failed and I lost about 4,000 litres. Even though we have had a couple or three heavy downpours in the last few weeks, I'm still only holding about 2,000 litres.
The car is quite dirty at the moment.

Unfortunately I think they are driven by liabilities :(
After speaking to a couple of the forecasters from the Sydney office, the BoM copped a bit after the 1998 Sydney to Hobart. I think there was a change in direction - If it looks like theres a slim chance it might happen they now forecast it. Unfortunately I think it's becoming a bit "cry wolf".
At work we use the special fire weather forecasts a lot (strangely :)) generally they are pretty much spot on, but during major fire activity then theres a tendency to be very conservative with the forecasts, and we get wind/temp predictions that are probably much closer to the worse case and not the most likely case.
Generally though I reckon our forecasters are doing a great job and forecast reliability is improving all the time, as the guys from the bureau said though a couple of degrees shift in the wind can make the difference between it raining in Nowra or Newcastle.

I don't know if there is anything in it, but my father always reckoned that forecasts improved dramatically in the early 1940s with the demands of military aviation in the war - and then dropped to almost pre-war levels after 1945 as observers and forecasters' working hours (and probably motivation) dropped back to peacetime levels. And never regained the accuracy they had during the war.
One of the interesting features we have on the ABC local radio every Friday morning is an interview with the man responsible for forecasting weather for the Siding Spring Observatory. He weighs up the various available forecasts, including ones not available to the public, such as the firefighting ones, and gives his estimate of the most likely outcome. But he does not pretend to any accuracy past about two days.

29.5mm o/night here. We're so lucky that we had pretty consistent falls from March through to August, with 177mm in June proving invaluable for spring and getting our little Pages River (a Hunter tributary) flowing for the first time in 18 months. September with only 5mm and the wind was a bit scary, but 49mm last month helped, and now this rain o/night is a blessing. It may even get the river flowing a little again.
It helps to be tucked into the lee side of the range, it really encourages any moisture present to be liberated.
Hope you get some more out your way JD.

Damned unpleasant showering in the rain.
Chuck a tarp over it until the wind dies down is about all really.:D
Then I might go out with the front end loader and see if there is anything left to salvage. Or just build me a bigger stronger bathroom roof.

Hi there all
We have been receiving huge down pours in the southern Flinders Rangers over the past couple of weeks as well - and its good to hear others are getting it as well.
For example last week we had falls of up to 100 mm in one hour and yesterday another 42 mm in less than a day.
We need the rain but not all at once please.

Best we have had since June, and what is more, greater than the total for July, August, September and October. Everything looking nice and damp, hope there has not been too much erosion.

Last night once again millions and possibly billions of litres of rain was delivered to Sydney and the coast. Almost all of it went into storm-water drains and out to sea.
Locally we received about 54 mm and my tank is now filled to overflowing.
But what really annoys me is that the Sydney Catchment Authority :nazilock: is planning new and better ways to steal water from the Shoalhaven River catchment and deliver it to urban enrichment, while the people of the Monaro and Goulburn where the water comes from are suffering the longest drought in memory.

Hi all
We have had nearly 5 inches in the last week, ie 125mm at the farm, Inverell. 1st rain to fall in 7 weeks so its a blessing. Althought I had started to plant Sorghum just after it started and it will have to be resown, too much rain on it. But its wonderfull for the pasture, and cattle prices I hope that the rain is widespread.
Cheers all

I'm glad its raining where its needed,
we are just about rained out here, well not really missed the afternoon thunderstorm yesterday and had a shower this pm, not much relief after 2 days of + 30 temps with probably 98% humidity, just standing on the veranda watching the grass grow makes you sweat.
the ground around here has reached saturation point, an hour shower ( well a bit more than a shower it pelted down) on friday afternoon created enough runoff to turn the lismore golf driving range into a lake.
the water is even oozing from the cracks in the road,
john

Please send some this way
The grass is starting to crackle when you walk on it an the cracks are starting to grow :( Damned hot today here... like you say, you sweat watching the grass grow...except its not growing here.
Let the girls (cows) out of the paddock into the front yard today...they had a ball in the long grass out front. Their paddock is slowly turning into a dust bowl :(
the only dust i get here is from sweeping the front verands ( yes I sweep it)
my girls don;t know which grass to eat, its all so long and green and they are getting sloppy because of it,
its yucky and the dogs like it more to roll in.
I'll point the singing frogs your way.

Nope! No rain since Saturday night here. I am amazed by how quickly all traces of it have disappeared - probably reflects the lack of soil moisture - it just soaked straight in. There were a few puddles, but even the mud in the bottom of most of them is crumbly now. The steady 25kt easterly has probably helped sry things out as well. Rain or at least thunderstorms are forecast for the rest of the week, and today I actually saw a few spots on the windscreen driving over to next door's, but it didn't even get close to needing the wipers. It has been mostly overcast, although the sun was sort of out for a lot of today.

we've had probably close to 1/2" here today (started at 5 this morning) just good soaking, steady rain.
It was funny yesterday on a Polo place 25km east of here (just up the road from where we had been living up till recently) watching the weather slowly come in from the north east over the range for several hours. It seemed to just hang on the range, then slowly made it's way down the valley.
I had to visit the grooms bunkhouses about an hour after it started (yes, they are all young female backpacker types, and I was escorted by one of the managers so they wouldn't mob me  ..........as if  ) and need the centre diff locked to drive the 1/2km back to the main road.
Driving back home, popped up over the small range between the two valleys and it was bone dry this side.

ricks valley rain sounds the same as here good soaking rain, but, we are well and truly soaked, haven't been down to look, but my spring and well must be flowing at a rapid rate and my sprnig fed dam overflowing.
well the overnight has been constant, it is damp really damp outside,
all tanks are full and overflpwing and think my drain frogs have moved to higher ground.
the bonus with all this rain is it brings all the creatures to the surface, the bad ones the cane toads, have been flattening a few on the road into town, haven't found any around the house yet.
the bad part is the green frogs are sitting on the road too, its like driving through a chicane trying to dodge them.

At the time we were well and truly drought stricken, having to dig holes in the river bed for water and the little showers that we had while on the north coast were great. We've had 150mm so far this week, roughly at the rate of 30mm a day. Generally good soaking rain dam levels went up slightly (0.4%). Our local dam received 105mm but is still 11m below full level, still that's better than the 19m below full last year.
