Read in the paper that merc G wagons are replacing the 110 in the Army. The deal is for 15 years with an option for another 15.Look like they are a good thing.Sorry to see LR go,but they did not even tender. They must sell alot of RR,D3's to walk away from that deal. Pat

Always had a soft spot for the G Wagon. The early ones released here were as slow as a wet week with the 3l diesel, and I think they are pretty heavy too.

DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific named preferred supplier for major Australian Defence Force contract October 15, 2007

Contract would strengthen company’s long standing and substantial business relationship with the Australian Defence Force
Preferred supplier to provide 1,100 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagons
Melbourne - DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific (DCAuP) has been named as the preferred supplier for a significant contract with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) as part of the LAND 121 (Overlander) project, the Honourable Dr Brendan Nelson MP, Minister for Defence, has announced.
LAND 121 (Overlander) is a multi-phased project to provide the Australian Defence Force (ADF) with field vehicles and trailers beyond the life-of-type of the current fleet. The contract in the Lightweight/Light category would see DCAuP supply the ADF with 1,100 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagons and provide the logistic support for these vehicles for 15 years with an option for a further 15. DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific will also enter into a Strategic Agreement with the ADF for the next 30 years, providing consultative advice and recommendations to ensure the fleet operates at its maximum efficiency.
“DaimlerChrysler is very proud to be named preferred supplier for this contract which would strengthen our already substantial business with the Australian Defence Force (ADF),” said Wolfgang D Schrempp, President and CEO for DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific.
“This good news again confirms that military experts agree the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon is the benchmark in this category.
“And furthermore it is timely coming on the eve of our company’s 50 year anniversary of operating in Australia, which takes place mid 2008.
“Having delivered our first products to the ADF in 1978, our company and the ADF enjoy a long standing and strong relationship,” said Mr Schrempp.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon is supplied to more than 60 armies around the world and is a tried and tested product. The G-Wagon variants which would be supplied to the ADF within LAND 121 include vehicles with a one or two tonne payload and a V6 common rail diesel engine. The advanced technology in this leading engine allows for excellent power and torque whilst being also being extremely fuel efficient. One of the G-Wagon variants which would be supplied to the ADF as part of this contract is a 6 by 6 (3 axle) vehicle, specifically developed for the Australian Army’s requirements.
Currently more than 2,000 of DaimlerChrysler’s vehicles in service for the ADF, including the Actros 8 by 8 heavy duty transport vehicles for the Royal Australian Air Force, Touring Coaches, and Unimog Medium Cargo vehicles which are used for a wide range of activities including refuelling, as ambulances and personnel carriers. DaimlerChrysler also has a long standing arrangement with the ADF to provide ongoing support for these vehicles through the provision of repair parts.
LAND 21 (Project Overlander)
LAND 121 (Overlander) is a multi-phased project to provide the Australian Defence Force with field vehicles and trailers beyond the life-of-type of the current fleet. The ADF fleet of field vehicles and trailers form the backbone of its war fighting force and sustainment structure. These vehicles are used to transport personnel, combat supplies, material, replacement combat systems, and when necessary, evacuate casualties. They also serve as platforms and prime movers for command, control, communications, computer and intelligence systems and numerous weapon systems.
DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific
DaimlerChrysler Australia/Pacific is a wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG. The main activity of the organisation is the importation and wholesale (and in some cases retail) of passenger cars and commercial vehicles, which are retailed through our extensive dealer network. DCAuP is ranked in the top 100 Australian companies and employees more than 1,000 people Australia wide.

I quite like the G Wagon - there's a privately owned one visits up the road sometimes. Looks solid and well engineered.

You've got to wonder about Land Rover, though. What are they doing? Will they even exist beyond the comfy stuff in a few years? Seems a shame.

So when can I buy one of the offcast 110's ??
No mention of when its being phased in??
It will probably be years & years before they start selling the parts backup. Hopefully they streamline that process as when I wore a green uniform they held on to thier stock like tightwads, we could still get Studebaker 6x6 parts 3 years after they sold the last vehicles at auction.
I want one of thier PTO winches. That way I can still fit an ashcroft overdrive. Yes, I do delude myself often..

I was on a plane a couple of months back with a guy in military procurement. He said the Merc offer was too good to refuse. Common supplyer for all different size of vehicle, and they would make them to ALL use the same oils and filters - making spares stocks and field repairs simpler.

Common supplier for most of the light vehicles was a requirement I believe, hence why LR didn't put in tender, because they don't have the larger vehicles.

That said, I think LR ate thick for not even trying, but we don't know all the reasons why.

I read that LR are selling Range Rover Sport's in the US that quick they are having trouble getting then into the country fast enough. Also they make lots more profit on a RRS than a Defender and the price that a miltary tender would allow for in order to be competive would = bugger all profit, that's why I reckon they did not even try. LR HQ in the UK would not be all that excited about that sort of tender.

The Defender is no longer a top selling model for Landrover. It's all about the RRS then the D3 after that.

I like the look of that Merc 4wd it looks the real deal. I think if they sold them here there would be alot of interest. However I think the reason they don't sell them here is because at the RRP they are way too expensive compared to the competition.

It should serve the ADF well.

Did I hear a correct rumour that Daimler Benz AG had even offered in the contract to re-purchase the vehicles (G Wagons and UniMogs) at the end of their service life? The deal mainly to keep them from competing directly with the civilian models!

Or am I talking through my hat again :):):):)

I reckon Merc's are great, if I could pickup one of these for the right price, I'd consider parting with the 110.......

This a minor point, yes good, but the maintenance regime is moving into the 00's as well. They will be condition monitored, probably electronically/remotely. You know the stuff, oil sampling, ultrasound particle measurement and infrared surface wear monitoring. It will be inovative!
I am so looking forward to it as a Tech

I always thought it would go to Benz or MAN. Good choice I reckon.

I've heard on the grapevine that the Gehlandewagon is looking good as it has armour as an optional accessory kit.
Personally I can't wait for the 110's to hit the market, a nice GS with winch would do me.
I'd love a Piewagon as a camper.......:)

You got it from me in May, my sources are good!
