well, lucas have done it again.. Or was it me???
I was driving home yesterday when I hit a medium sized pot whole in the Rangie and copped a pretty big jolt.... Instantly, the engine died. My first thought was that I had dropped a lead / wire / something in the jolt so I checked all that stuff and the car still wouldnt fire - even though the starter motor was turning the engine. quick check revealed no spark. But, I also get nothing on the dash display when I turn the key - but all the other thingies ( lights power windows etc) work. Dont think I can hear the fuel pump kick in but I will need to check that again with some help from the boy...So is this a low tension circuit poblem??

I am stumped (not that that is very hard to do!).... so ANY thoughts would be appreciated.. I am wondering about these inertia switches.. does the 89 classic have one and if so where is it?

Thanks - I will check that now... Any idea what it looks like? I had one in a Triumph that had a drop button on a little black box... similar sort of thing??

What month 89 as they changed things that year. Do u have exposed door hinges?
do u have flapper or hotwire injection?
As Tony says If its a later model with the updates u may have the inertia but if its the older model u wont have the inertia and therefore have another problem. Check all your fuses as having no dash lights come on is a sign of no voltage to ignition.
seems funny it happened after a bump. Remove the lower dash under the steering wheel and check the wires from the ign switch, from memory a large white one and a red one and possibly a brown one. You may have disloged one of those connections.
Let us:) know what u find

The ignition switches are notorious for coming loose on the Classic RR as the switch section is only crimped into it's housing. Once they become loose, the contacts inside make & break whenever they like.

Have a look at the plastic section of the switch & see if wiggling it makes your ignition erratic.

Then again, knowing LR, it could be something else too .

hey...do you remember if the 89 had an inertia switch......?My '87 & '88 don't have one (I think I would have tripped it by now if it did;)) so I think the '89 would be the same.

The LSE first appeared here with the 1993 MY (KA).

I have a feeling the inertia switch came along when Hotwire did. That would make it 1990 (GA) IIRC.

Thanks boys... Was a loose wire right up behind the ignition switch. It must have just come loose after the jolt.. it did look pretty tired. I replaced the wire ( and yes it was the large white one).. and all is good. as for the inertia switch.. couldnt find it - so i am guessing that it doesnt have one...

But once again.. Thanks boys.. saved me some time and money, and I have learned a bit more about the Rangie.
