God day to you all. Have recently purchased a 97 autoTDi. Am having mixed feelings about the lack of space after the sale of my much loved Defender, but anyway....I am having trouble, at times starting the car. Most of the time it will start perfectly, at other times there will be nothing, not even the click of the solenoid and at other times I'll go through the turn of the key and it will only start at one very obscure point in the turn. The first time it happened I thought that it was the wire going to the solenoid on top of the starter. I jiggled this and the car started perfectly for a number of times. This morning though the car would not start after this so I shifted the auto through the gears and back and thought that it might be the switch on the auto (assuming there is one). The barrell and key are new. Could be a bad earth somewhere and if it might be this where should I check?

Has anyone had similar dramas/solutions?
Cheers,

Dan

All i can think is that it is a contact somewhere that the problem. The solenoid on the starter is currently playing up on an isuzu county i have here i just have to get around to cleaning it. My suggestion is that next time you have the trouble you use a test light or multimeter to find where the electricity stops. A bit of a problem if you have to go to work. Have you tried just holding it on start for 10 seconds or so to see if it will come to life?

To look for this yourself, you'll probably need some sort of wiring diagram and a multimeter.
The Haynes manuals have some basic ones but the Rave Cds would be more comprehensive ( not having a Rave i don't know )

You're possibly on the right track with the auto selector but could be a number of other things - ( eg. alarm ECU, immobiliser spider. )

- might need to be taken to a Landy expert if it gets too annoying.

It could be the starter circuit relay, I think it should be mounted behind the drivers side kick panel.

BigJohn, changed the starter relay and have the problem still. When I say I have the problem I rotated the ignition to start a number of times quickly in a row without wanting to start the engine. All I wanted to do was see if it would start to kick over. Out of 6 go's it failed two or three times. I'm starting to think that it may well be in the ignition switch even though it is new. If the pain persists...

Aha
sounds like the same intermittent problem i get occasionly,
for my money its either a flattish battery in the alarm remote, not disabling the circuit, hence no solenoid click
or the infamous alarm spider problem.

My Broome just click into search and the alarm spider faults and lnks will come up. I will have a look and link them
