Don't know about $500, but a Dopod D810 / HTC P3600 does very nicely. Closer to $1000 though.

anything with 64mb internal memory and a gps reciver inbuilt will cut it providing its running windows mobile 5 or better. IF you hit that spec I'll send you the setup I used to use in my old mio. you used to be able to get a GPS that did its magic via the SD slot but I havent seen them for ages.

I did a bit of research on these and ended up with the HP rx5965 IPAQ- a PDA with inbuilt GPS -seems to run quite well with Oziexplorer. Good screen and comes with vehicle mount kit.
There's another model the same only with no WiFI (rx5765 )that you'll pick up these days for $500.
Mine has 2GB internal memory and can take a 2GB SD card as well. Comes with TomTom Street Navigator and all the normal Windows Mobile things Outlook, Excel, Word etc.
The only issue I have is that it locks itself up sometimes - but there's a soft reset button that fixes that. Seems to only happen an appoinment in Outlook pops up when Ozi is running.

I have a Toshiba E570 that I got second hand about 2-3 years ago for $145. Plus I got a CF GPS for $125ish (new) and a 1 gig SD card for $99ish (a bargain back then) (new).
Running Windows PPC 2002.

I got everything from Ebay.

IMHO $500 will not buy everything you need new although I haven't looked lately.

Yes it will if you only want a PDA with inbuilt GPS --- and don't want a phone in it as well :D

But you'l l need to buy some 2G SD cards ( about $35 each ) and OziExplorerCE ( about $35) I suppose - so add $100 or so.

Garmin IQue M5, excellent unit, with routing, also tracks4australia maps for more detail in out of way places and OziexplorerCE to run my own maps.

Bit dearer than what your looking at, the M4 is cheaper and if you like palm format the 3600 but has a few extra problems.
Very happy and never ceases to amaze my mates.

hmmmm might have to look at another one. I had a problem with the power cable on mine last week so I tossed it over my shoulder (in the car) and I haven't been able to find it yet .

When I bought mine I specifically wanted a CF GPS (so it was all in one unit) and SD memory card so it narrowed the field to have both in the one PDA so an onboard GPS would be great.

hey utemad you have to charge it first:wasntme:

Thanks for that :p

I've never had it so flat that it wouldn't at least flicker the screen.

I have to pull it apart anyway. I am going to hard wire it to 12v battery with a switch and then bolt it to a small frame which is in turn bolted to the dash. I don't use it out of the vehicle anyway.

You will need Oziexplorer for the PC and OziexplorerCE for the PDA, Demo versions are available to download from the web site shown below. You will need to convert maps to a format that CE will use, (OZF) Img2Ozf Conversion Utility, this program can be found at the Ozi web site and is a free download.
Convert your Topo maps and install onto you memory card show the program where they are and hey presto.
FAQ can be found at www.oziexplorer.com
