Hi everyone,

Picked up my new Defender on Wednesday. After a couple of days can offer the following:
After driving a TD5 Defender for 6 years the new one is a different beast. It's quieter and more refined. Relaxed cruising at 110kph, in fact have to be careful not to go faster. The gearbox is nicer and quieter and with 6 gears. In traffic it's less jerky when creeping along in 1st or 2nd. The new dash layout is smart and the heater is brilliant with excellent a/c as well. It's even got a CD player (single disc) but no means of connecting an MP3 player. The new rear seats are much better and very much easier to fold and reset and there's now a proper middle shoulder and lap seatbelt. I don't have the third row seats but they looked good on the demo car at MLR. The remote locking is useful but doesn't work from a distance. Haven't done any rough stuff yet but assume the off-road capabilities are the same. Dealer says the fuel consumption should br slightly better. Time will tell.

Cheers
Jules

Of course he does, they will tell you anything. I'm holding off spending money on my 98 just in case I fall for the new one.

Thanks for your comments Jules, as already stated nice to get the new vs old comparison.
Now I will just have to try one myself :).

Cheers,
Paul:twobeers:

This is an interesting point. Initially I thought the Aussie spec did have the iPod input with the six speaker setup and so did the dealer as he kept talking about it. When I asked where exactly it plugged in he didn't know so we checked the manual. When we went to the spot on the head unit where the input jack was meant to be, lo and behold there was a blanking plate over it!

The dealer then said he would talk to Landrover to ask them what the deal was since he had been telling all his customers that it definitely had MP3 capabilities. He suggested that maybe LR would have to retro-fit it to satisfy the sales hype.

Since then I have reviewed the brochure and LRA's website and it doesn't actually show or refer to the iPod input. The UK site however, has a longer paragraph which indicates that the iPod input is standard and only the high tweeters are optional. I am sure that prior to LRA posting the final 2007 Defender pages on their website, the "coming soon" stuff referred to the iPod.

Yeah... My initial thought was "Hang on, there's a socket on the dash". So, it seams like you guys don't get the same spec as us???
