Long story short, had a leaking valley cover/inlet manifold gasket replaced by a local mechanic about 12 months ago because of a very slight water leak (1 litre per 1000km) and the bloody thing still leaks. It had the original metal gasket put in with ilamar (sp) but rumour has it because he jammed a wire under it, it has relifted to remove the wire. (most probable the reason it still leaks). Because this vehicle is a work bus and I dont make money when it dosnt go is why it has never gone back. I will do it myself over christmas I think but the thing I want to know is there a better gasket available or a better sealing compound to use with the original because I only want to do the job once.
cheers

There's a rubberised version, and it's recomended you put some sealant around the water ports, even on this one.

So I was told, and so I did on mine.

Pretty easy DIY job.

Hi Micheal
Is that a metal Gasket with a thin rubber stripes just around the ports?. Where are these sourced from and what gasket goo are you using
Will also add that I am a deisel fitter by trade and the least amount of time I have to put my hand on a spanner these days the happier I am

What goop you use depends on what gasket you get.

if you get the old school gaskets thats got a cork like sealing material, use hylomar #3 non hardening gasket sealant build it and let it sit for a couple of hours before getting it wet.

If youve got the rubberised one almost any petrol+ oil friendly gasket sealastic should do the job.

Yep like dave said tho id try getting a good brand gasket in the composit stuff and use the danagrip red which is available from super cr@p this stuff is great tho smear both sides of the gasket and the head and the manifold and let it dry for at least 1/2 hour before refitting and it wont leak ever :D:D:D:D:D

From memory it was all black & rubberised. My supplier said to use silastic, I can't remember which silicone I used though. My supplier is currently overlanding a Defender from Vladivostok to the UK, but I suppose any parts supplier could get you the rubberised one if you ask for it specifically.
