What services have you turned off?

You might need to change your networking options by adding/removing windows components, in control panel/add or remove programs (in classic view).

If the printer is installed and you have the network working you should just be able to right click on the printer icon in printers and faxes, either in start menu or in the control panel, click on sharing and share it across the network.

I'm guessing that didn't work.;)

no Simon,,
this install of XP has NEVER accepted another pc onto a network,, I can get to the stage of being able to "see" the other PC, but thats it,, no data has ever been exchanged,,,

Inc-
no matter how many times I run THE WIZARD, it mostly comes back as--"an error has occurred---- blah blah blah"

then you have a software problem or you are answering the questions wrong.

:p

you have run the network sharing wizard as well as the network wizard?

sounds like a crook install of windows or an early edition hot corp copy...

what chipset is the lan adapter?

I'm thinking of reloading XP on my primary Pc using the proper software,, read on if you're bored,,
though its not as easy as it sounds,
because the original and only legXl windows I owned was ME,,
the XP home I bought therefore was the upgrade version(still legXl),,(which sits on the secondary PC,, not doing much at all)

it gives you two options,, upgrade ME or fresh install of Xp,, but wont let you do anything unless it finds ME(or 98 etc) .
but--- ME formats as FAT,, which loses me 6 GB of space when I convert to NTFS,,

which means the install will exceed the 10GB i have partitioned for it.

dontcha love computers---

so, will have to move partitions, make one bigger, and one smaller,, move some **** onto the external HDD,,

and then reconfigure windows --

just to get one PC to talk to another.
:angrylock:

anyone got any helpfull ideas??

anyone got any helpfull ideas??

have you tried turning off your firewalls?
including the XP firewall

In my experience I have found XP wizards to be not as magic as they claim.
if they still can't connect try putting your printer on the second PC which cant see the first. Then share it on there. Its worked for me before.
OR
forget the wizards and go static IP and state all your setting to ensure they are ALL the same.

have you done an ipconfig/all on both machines to ensure they match?

maybe give a quick bullet point list of the stuff you have tried?

on a clean install the upgrade version will ask for you to put the ME cd in so it can check you have a valid upgrade product.. you can start with a blank hdd if you wish.

worked like a charm,,,

turned out a part of the problem was the on-board lan port on the primary pc didnt work,,,

but with just enough cables I now have a lan connection between the two pc's, an internet connection on the primary and spare net capablity for Mrs Pedro's laptop,,

even saved all my bookmarks and email addys;)
