Well, took the Rangie out on her maiden voyage after getting it all sorted. Was planning on a gentle little treck out the bush as my g'box (reverse gear) was already very delicate. Anyway, 10 minutes into the track we (another mate in a hilux) decided to venture in a muddy area. Well, I was brave (read stupid) enough to have a bit of a blat and slide around the mud a bit. Well, not much later, I turn and find the nose diving into the dirt. I thought WTF happened here?!!! Well, the pic shows the mess I was in. To make things worse, it took 4 hours to get me out, and part way out the gearbox finally had it. I stuffed the reverse completely and cooked the clutch.
The pic doesnt do it justice on how bad the area was. In fact, my mate was walking towards me to help and he sank to hes knees, like quicksand. He had to be pulled out as the mud was like a huge sucktion cup.
So, now I need another g'box. This time ill bang an lt95 in her.
Cheers,

Yes, I have some side shots which ill grab off the video camera. The engine bay was CAKED with mud as the fan spat the crap everywhere. To add insult to injury, the gas system (electrics) stopped working as a result so I was only on a reserve fuel tank, which, also ran out of petrol, so had to be towed out!
So the question now remains, is it easier to remove the gearbox through the inside of the car (remove seats, floor, dash etc) or through the bottom of the car?
The track is called Peverata, generally a nice rocky track with water holes, but this was a clearing with trees removed, so I recon I sunk into what used to be tree roots...

It looks like a saw dust pit - turned to bog hole - I stepped into one of those once - glad I didn't drive in.
On the other note, I have an LT77 that I was given when my RRC Gearbox needed repair. I was given it a day after I ordered $2K worth of new gearbox innards. Anyway - I'm told it needs bearings, I haven't pulled it apart. It's FREE to a good home.

I really need something that will just bolt in as ive got no idea about g'boxs and dont want to go down the road of rebuild. The other problem is living in Tassie could mean freight expenses are high. Thanks for the post ;)

Wow that is a big "swallow you alive" sink whole, thats when you want a winch on the back with about 100m of plasma ;)
Just drop the box out undernieth on a trolley jack, much easier than dismantling 1/2 the car.

thats the same result you can get when you dont watch where you drive on the flood plains in darwin... cept usualy once the front goes the rear follows slowly.
the box is easier to trolly jack out the bottom and its easier to do if you seperate the tcase out first if its a 2 parter unlike the 95 which is a single entity.
When you get to doing it before you start grab some long partially threaded bolts and cut the heads off, take out 4 of the gearbox bolts and insert those then use them as guide rods to help with dissasembly and assembly.

Make sure you do this, not really a problem for pulling it out, but a MUST for assembly:)

Where the bellhousing bolts to the block, remove some of them bolts and replace with headless bolts......be sure to hacksaw a slot in them for a flathead screwdriver to:)
They are used as a guide to get the box mated to the block, makes life HEAPS easier

Stooge...
I too succumbed while *Shock*Horror* doing some excellent circle work some years ago now...
That is the hole I got my RR stuck in too, except I went ALL the way in:(:(:( It was originally dug with an excavator in that old saw mill pit to aid in fire fighting water catchment etc, (It is very deep isn't it:p) but they stopped using those catchments because the whole area there is boggy and they can't get the tankers anywhere near it.
I had to climb out the window, and I was winched out with a PTO equipped RR from HARD ground some 25 metres away .
The ECU under the drivers seat was wet, and the trans etc was water polluted.
Cost me a bit that day.
If I was with you, I would've warned ya!!!:D:D:D ( I would've, honest!!)

Ohh, OK JC, now I dont feel so bad, if the MASTER got caught, well then who wouldnt :p
I was doing some fairly fast circle/sliding work before I got stuck, lukily at that moment my speed was just off idle and not booting the throttle
Talk soon mate.
