I have just got off the phone to the SA Dept of Roads/Transport, who tell me I can put my little Series I on historic registration if I become a member of a club and they certify that it is in "original condition" whatever that means.

Is anyone here from the SA Land Rover Register and knows what is involved in getting it certified?

One immediate problem I can see is that it is not registered, so how can I take to be inspected by the club.....

Anyone here from SA who does this with their Series? Is it a fag to comply or pretty easy? You get to use it for 90 days a year and have to keep a log book. Cost is 3 months rego.

The other option I've got is to put it under Primary Production registration which is $380 a year.

Thanks as always
David

I got the impression that I was allowed to use it for any 90 days in a year. He didn't say anthing about only being on a club run. He did say that there are big penalties for not filling out the log book BEFORE you take it out though.

Luckily (???) I am a farmer so Primary Production rego is legit for me. No restrictions at all on when or how often it gets driven if I go down that path. Just a bit cheaper than normal rego.

SA's regulations are a bit to QLD, but basically NM is on the money.

Here are SA's requirements:

Owners of historic vehicles and prescribed left hand drive vehicles are responsible for:

maintaining financial membership of a club

cancelling the conditional registration of the vehicle when a change of ownership of historic vehicles and prescribed left hand drive vehicles occurs or when the owner of the vehicle is no longer a financial member of a club. The log book issued for the vehicle must be returned to the issuing club for cancellation

presenting vehicle/s for inspection when required and have the club’s authorised person validate their log book/s and current registration papers

ensuring their conditionally registered vehicle is not driven on a road or road-related area unless the club’s authorised person has completed the necessary details in the log book

ensuring their conditionally registered vehicle is not driven on a road or road related area more than 90 days each period of 12 months in the period of registration

ensuring their conditionally registered vehicle is not driven on a oad or road related area if it does not comply with this Code of Practice

ensuring their conditionally registered vehicle is not driven on a road or road related area unless an entry is made in the log book (the log book entry must be completed before the commencement of a journey). A journey may consist of one or more separate trips i.e. A journey that commences at 10.00am on a particular day and finishes at 9.00am the next day constitutes two calendar days. Consequently, two separate days use must be recorded in the log book

maintaining the vehicle to the same standard, specification and configuration as it was presented for initial inspection to the club’s authorised person (fair wear and tear is accepted).

Just a word of advice, there can be a very restricted view of original condition by certain Clubs.

In my personal discussions with members of different clubs and comparison of individual clubs requirements for historic registration requirements through the 4 states of Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and "the ACT". (Have not had a lot of discussion with Qld, WA and the NT clubs) It appears that the Club/s in SA have the most restricted view of original condition, including at one stage requiring the original style batteries with exposed lead bridges between the cells and having the correct type/colour of vinyl on the seats.

This understanding of course excludes Holden engines in Land Rovers and in fact (as we discussed) would exclude Tom Kruse's Leyland Badger Truck* from Historic Registration in SA.

Lots of luck with the process, you may have to shop around for the correct club.

Hi David, I'm a member or LRRSA as well (but I don't have historic vehicle, although it's likely I'll keep the Disco long enough to qualify eventually). If you come along to the next meeting it's actually a swap meet so you can bring some bits to sell or take home some more junk. PM me if you like so you'll know someone there.

Hi David,

I'm a new member, having joined just over a week ago at Bonython park, so you'll not be the only newbie if you pop along to the next meeting. :D

Cheers

JSP - I had a feeling the pedantry came down from the top.

There are clubs in NSW who won't allow any modifications and then there are things like the Historic Racing Car Club, who accept all sorts of cars modified or not as long as they were raced 30 years ago.

Other options in NSW are things like the commercial vehicle clubs, which accept trucks with all sorts of modified drive trains.

Looks like I better come along to a meeting and check it out. Thanks for the invite. I've put it in my diary for the 30th.

Do I just turn up or should I be registering somewhere beforehand?

I think the vehicle is pretty original, in that it is not heavily modified from standard. The engine is a 2L (not a 2 1/4) which I believe is the original size, but it has had new pistons/valves/etc, as you would expect on a 52 year old car.

If they are too picky and it looks odious then I'll just do the Primary Producer thing.
