We're looking for a replacement runaround/fun car early next year. This car has to do all the Mum & kids running about and be impeccably safe. It should also be fun to drive. It has to be less than 4.3m long to fit in our garage.

We've stumbled across the audi A3 sportback. We had one last night in the 1.8l turbo W DSG and we've been very impressed with it. Goes really well, beautifully built, and huge inside.

Does anyone know much about these? Experiences?

I know three people with 10 year old (or thereabouts) Audis and they love them. Great highway cars (think Autobahn).

Like all those complex Euros, they are expensive and difficult to maintain. Buy them new and trade them in every 2-3 years. An old one is a liability. Jurgen, our German whiz on fuel injection and car computers refuses to work on Audis, Kia Carnival, P38 RR's, and a few others, which he describes in a heavy German accent as "Fokking Nightmares". He freely tells clients this and asks them to go elsewhere.

Love them and own a 2005 8P A3 2litre FSI. Bought it 2nd hand in January of this year with 20,000ks on it and it has been a pleasure to drive.

I bought mine as a daily driver due to my D2 being modded too much for off road and not really suited for my work.

Have owned a mk 4 2l VW Golf and liked that but this is miles better and with Audi, VW and some of the other European cars, you get good build quility. Yes you pay a little more for it but when I was looking around for an economical daily driver either new or 2nd hand, nothing came close to the Audi in terms of drivability and quality.

Like any car, service it well and you will be fine.

Buy one, you won't regret it......especially the sportback DSG. Also check out www.ozaudi.com (http://www.ozaudi.com) for some great info.

Aye, Mick

Thanks Mick. That looks like a good forum.. will look.

Good report on your car too. That tally's with what I've heard about them. The seem much better made than the SA Golf.

Interesting about the expensive repairs though.

I think Audis are extremely under rated. We had an A8L 4.2 Q as a limo when I was chauffering. It was my car ( well th companies but you know what I mean) and it was the best to drive, crapped on the Mercs and Bms, was far more relible and the cliants prefered it to ride in. Audis are great cars.
