1958 series 1 88"

A friend of mine has a series 1 (1958 88") that he's going to sell in the near future and I told him to give me first dibs,I just need some opinions as to how much I should offer when the time comes.The old girl is in original condition and in good shape which until recently was rego'd and driven daily,comes with spare truck cab,doors and wheels.It's fitted with a 2 1/4 petrol but the original 2 litre is in the shed,it hasn't run for about 15 years now.It also has a capstan winch on the front.So...what is it worth???

Value is very dependent on condition. At 1958 it is not particularly historic, and the engine change devalues it a bit, although this is offset by the other engine being available (but presumably in need of overhaul).

Capstan winch is a plus, as would be a complete history if available.

Assuming that it has no significant rust, and all the panels are straight, and everything is there and in reasonable shape, perhaps as much as $2500 or even $3000, and start deducting from that for things that are wrong with it (i.e. going to cost money to fix). Apart from the obvious rust and panel damage, look for faulty brakes, lights, worn steering box, front axle (swivels) and tie rod ends, broken or badly rusted springs, that sort of thing. None of these are killers (like bad rust), but they add up, and the bargain can soon get expensive.

You don't say what its got on top at present, but S1 truck cabs are probably highly saleable, as are the spare doors (if any good). Wheels are useful to have a few spares (you can have more than one set of tyres), but not very saleable, as they are interchangeable from S1 - 3 so there are a lot about.

I know this is not very definite, but again, the price depends very much on who is looking at it and its condition. On the downside, note that someone recently paid $250 (but offered $500) for a similar one that actually goes, and although it did not have the extra bits, it did have the original engine.

It's got a soft top at the moment,panels are all pretty straight and there's no rust.The owner looked after it and all the bits are there,the truck cab and doors are also good still with the original paint.

Have a look at the thread "Series 1 Paddock Find" and see how it compares to that. That one was only $250, but I would have said it was worth $1000 - $1250, but it is very difficult to put a figure on it. If put up for auction, it might have got anywhere from the $250 up to several thousand, depending on how many collectors were at the sale. And there was a comparable one near here on ebay six months ago that failed to get a single bid. So you just can't tell.

But you could refer your friend to the one I mentioned above.

Agree with all of what John has said.

Re wheels though, Series 1 wheels will fit and are interchangeable with S2 and S3, but they are unique in that they are 5" and S2 and S3 rims are 51/2". And they are not as readily available as the later ones.

I have a stack of five inch wheels - all off Series 2/2a - the 5.5s were fitted to 109s, but 88s, as far as I know all had 5.00s as standard. Not sure about Series 3, as I've had nothing to do with Series 3 88s.

The 5 inch rims are stamped 231601 and the 5 1/2 inch are 272309:)

231601. are standard on 86/88 vehicles fitted withthe following 6.00 x 16/6.50 x 16 tyres

272309. are optional equiptment on 86/88 vehicles and to vehivles fitted with 7.00/7.50 x 16 tyres.

All Australian Military Series Landrovers & No5 Trailers were fitted with 272309 rims for commonality.:)

This will give you an idea of the part numbers for series rims and their offset.

The 569690 (Late type 5.5") rim was a U.K. spec rim and was not manufactured by ROK/ROH in Australia. The rims were often referred to as "English rims" in NSW. There were also some late SIII 5.5" which I haven't added to the listing (yet).

Addit: Also the rim listed as 569204 the late type SIIa/SIII 1 Ton model and the late SIIa Forward control. The difference between that and the early SIIa F/C may only be in the thickness of the material and not the off-set, we haven't been able to find an example of 569204 in Oz to compare. Also we haven't yet compared the off-set of the Defender 127/130 6.5" rim to the other 6.5" rims.

The series 1s have smaller studs than the Series 3 (16mm and subsequent models including Range Rovers, but are the same size as almost all Series 2/2a.

That said however the S1 rims will fit S3s and vica versa.
