What's a reasonable interval for changing serpentine belts on a 300 Tdi? And is there a brand of belt that won't squeak?

Probably not the belt squeaking but the bearings (pulley)
Fan hub needs a new timing case or after market bearing..the others generally can be regreased in a push or are pretty cheap to replace..
except the water pump:( mine is squeaking like a bitch at the moment.

Belt squeak can also be caused by the tensioner pulley wearing and running off true.

I replace big reds at every 50K Km service and put the old on on shelf and the old spare goes to the bin

I seemed to be constantly replacing squeaking and micro cracking Gates belts and have gone to Dayco and also replaced the tensioner (the nylon bush appeared worn, and the tensioner was sticky when I moved it ) and no more squeaks. :D

Goodyear.
Not sure the part # I have may work over there though...

MAke sure you get the correct one - there was a change around 95/96. About 10mm difference in length

No it's the belt, not the bearings. I can quieten it for a while with a dry-lube stick but the noise always comes back. I have noticed that the tensioner pulley is not running true and that is no doubt the cause. I had heard some belts were quieter than others though.

rather than put a stack of links up,
if you go to search up there on the right
just type in 'tensioner pulley'
all the associated links will come up, even some with photos
i had a similar problem but no squeaks
i guess it depends on how out the pulley is,
