My heater/aircond sliding fan switch is playing up. I believe its a common problem that a bit of emery paper will fix.
Any tips on removing them. How to get the knob off without breaking it and any things to watch out for in removing the fascia trim

I had my fan speeds play up a month ago, if you drop the passenger side upper foot well cover off and look in towards the centre you will find the fan resistor (I think thats what its called) youl see a plug with four wires hanging out of it !, I brought a good second hand one in case and when I had a look the plug had just fallen out and when connected it worked magicly ! :) Now I have a spare

My problem is that it works and then cuts out, I just tap the sliding switch knob gently with my finger and she works again. I believe they loose contact and a emery rub gets the contacts working properly again.

I have pulled one of these out before in my '93 ( I think your's is the same), they are held together with 3 tags down each side of the switch.

Be careful, the thing falls apart once you open it but the emery solution will work.

Cheers, Pete'

Getting to the switch is sort of difficult:

For the knobs, gentle use of vice grips to pull them off the posts work (emphasis "gentle")

Then the front panel comes off with two screws

Now pull the radio, clock, coin tray and drinks tray and take the facia off. This is hardest bit as the plastic can become brittle and break if you force it. The heater assembly cannot be maneuvered without the facia off.
Photos # 128 and 38 in my gallery show some detail ( For reasons I don't know at the moment I can't link them to this post)

Removed the front panel and switches ok. Thanks for the info.
Getting the actual fan speed switch out was a job, I don't know how they can get something bigger in to its smaller retainer :o.
But after a bit of careful pulling and using screwdrivers to ease it out of it's tight housing, I succeeded.
I gave the copper terminals a rub with steel wool rapped around a screwdriver like a cotton bud and polished them. Then forced it back together. Another tight job.
Refitted it and it hasn't let me down now , it never cuts out like it did previously after lengthly running.:D:D
