D110 - VDO Temp guages

G'day Guys,

Anyone changed their Defender VDO Temp guage from the factory Cold to Hot guage to a linear scaled temp guage?

I dont like the idea of it just sitting there in the middle while the engine actually gets hot and cold - I prefere to see the guage moving ever so slightly.

i fitted a mechanical temp gauge to my 300tdi with the scale going from 40d at about 8 o'clock around to 120d i think at about 4 o'clock...it a speco i liked the range

as the standard one is VDO elec I was hoping at worst to be able to just change over the guage - providing the sendor has the correct Ohmn range.

I put in a VDO electric one with sender....

All up i think it was $80

The sender is the hard part off memory.. the thread was weird...

yes it will work mark, but like you said, its the Ohms that count.
see if you can get any numbers of the sensor, that way you can use that to get the right gauge.

ok, here what i found.
temp gauge in fender is by VDO (i think) and the sensor is by mr Bosch. sensor pt# 0 280 130 026

olympic instruments should be able to sort out a gauge to suit?

or you could just use a VDO mechanical gauge, and the thermowell just screws straight into the Tdi guage port, and the sensor screws into that. Easy and accurate.

There should be a few posts of mine with pt. #'s on here somewhere.

I'm always suss of electric gauges as earth's can and do interfere with the readings. Just turning the headlights on used to alter mine.

Dunno Phil.

VDO thermowell is 1/8"-27 NPTF. Had to replace my gauge a few months back as the capillary had chaffed through (including the stainless braid outer) on an injector line where I had it cable tied and IIRC was around $120. (cheaper to replace than repair)
Ran it in corrugated tube this time.
