Hi all,

Just a thanks for the tips and replies I got for changing the time belt on my 300Tdi Defender.

Two weeks ago Michael2 and myself fitted a new timing belt kit (minor)

We used all the information from this site and also the difflock guide to do it.

All in all it took about 8hrs which is not too bad for a IT nerd and a ambo driver.

Have done almost 2000km it all seems good. The belt was last done 80,000km ago and the belt was in nearly perfect condtion although there was a tiny amount of black dust so better safe than sorry.

The only bummer was that I had to buy a new front timing cover as the last turkey broke the viscous fan flange and just jammed a bolt in to look like there was four bolts holding it on. ($460 later) The viscous fan bearing in the cover was stuffed anyway. To make it worse I had to put in a new viscous fan ($220) as it was leaking silicon and its bearing was also shot.

But it was a fun project and if you take the time to read all the tips etc most people handy with a spanner should be able to do this themselves.

Same hear, great to hear someone else giving it a go

Hey Minni, welcome to landrovering. My last 4x4 was a Jackaroo, the big difference you will notice is just how easy these things do the off roading. It will be a love or hate releationship, you'll soon know...

Damn, I wish I had of known this a few weeks ago!

Do you mean the whole fan assembly or just the viscous hub that the fan attaches to.

That is quick - I think it took me that long just to read the how to manual!

But once we had done it we thought the next one will be much easier and definitely quicker.

Plus we have the satisfaction of saying I can do it myself and if the belt goes when outback then I know we can be on our way in a couple of hours.

Thanks for the pics and info Langy. Will do this if ever the fan or viscous hub dies.

That's sometimes the hard part about such a huge forum. Its probably been done here already but you have know what to search for or better yet think to search first before plowing in buying LR replacement parts cause you think they are the only parts to fit - oh and be near the computer when you've pulled you car down which is unlikely cause you are so grubby.

MinniTheMoocha,
Looking forward to the day I need to change mine!
How did you go holding/clamping the crank, cam/ pump gears in place? Did you use any specialised tools?

Mate, you spoke the God's honest truth there!

New Year's eve 2000, 20 minutes out of Lake Grace heading to Esperance to see in the New Millenium at Duke of Orleans Bay. We didn't make it. Worst New Years Eve ever, and the most expensive.

the pump you use a drill bit the right size so if your like me and have lots of drill bits you will have one thats spot on. to lock the crank i used a left over main bearing bolt screwd straight in to the waiding plug hole but need to be machined to fit the slot in the flywheel. the cam shaft you just line up with the timeing mark theres no way to lock that. the balencer bolt should come un done easy enough as long as no bastard has locktited it. also useing the large bolt like i did on the flywheel means it locks it real well and can realy hang off a breaker bar to get it un done. but i just used a rattle gun

Well thats true - so will have to carry some rockers and pushrods! And a spare timing kit.

there is actually two slots in the flywheel. One for the timing (think 4mm) and one for used when tightening it up (5-6mm).

To undo the flywheel bolt I used a crank bar with 27mm socket and rested the bar on the chassis. Removed the fuel pump power and turned over the starter once. This loosened the bolt which was loctited perfectly. The LR manual says the bolt should be loctited but I have it from others that instead of loctite to use thread sealer!

I did use a tool kit for the LR. Bought it on EBAY. But I have seen normal tools (most made by hand used) Search for 300Tdi timing belt.
