Hi mates,
I need urgent advice. I was about to purchase a R380-box out of a Disco to go into my project 110. Now I was informed a Disco box won't fit due to the lever position. Anyone her who can confirm this or give me advice how to proceed??? Need to know soon as I will have to place a bid.
Ta´ in advance!

Cheers

The actual gear boxes are the same so a swap should be possible...

However, there will probably be a couple of tings you'd need to change. IIRC it'll be input shaft & the gear stick selector thingy... though the hole for the selector should be in the same place (if that makes sense...).

someone should be along in a mo with a more accurate description.

I have a disco TX in my defender 130 300Tdi

The brake cable is different as is the housing for the speedo drive but all these bits just swap over.

Not too difficult, but I had it done by KLR due to time constraints and they had the car anyway.

Makes it sluggish off the line but sooo much nicer cruising. Can hear the radio st 100 and will cruise at 120 without screaming.

I also got the Q version with quiet gears

You probably need the version with the centre diff and then you use your old leaver to opperate it I think that relates to late 2001 disco 1?

I paid $700 for a good one with brake etc with 51k on the clock!

I would recommend it

Unfortunately the Disco 'box requires all the internal shift rods etc from the defender box to allow the shifter housing to be in the right place. This is because the hole drilled in the end of the rod where the ball/socket for the bottom of the shifter stick pin slides on is offset a fair bit differently in the disco, and this means the grub screw can't be tightend adequately and will come loose....
SO.... It can be fitted but the defender shift rod and housings require fitting to the Disco's box. About an hours work on a bench, as the trans needs to be separated to do this.

We've had to do it once before, but my advice to people is to buy a defender one anyway, as AFAIK they also have a slightly lower first gear:)

Thanks for all your replies, mates!
Well then, I'll be looking for another gear box then. shame, really as the one off the Disco would have been quite a bargain.
I'll keep you posted!
