Hi there
I have been offered a 94 Defender 130 Dual Cab (TDI).
If it was an older series vehicle or a fire engine its not a problem but the defender range all new to me - and before purchasing I have a few questions for the forum:
1. What sort of fuel ecconomy would you expect (110)
2. What do I look for when inspecting?
3. Any known problems with them?
4. What are they like on the highway (speed and ride)
5. What sort of $$$'s
6 What areb they like off road.
7. Are they powerful enough to tow car trailers....vintage series vehicles...
PS he did say it has a few oil leaks........
Looking forwards to the forums input.

about 10km per ltr for fuel consumption as far as price goes that will depend on mileage and condition but i would think 12000 upwards?

I had one for a while towing vans back in about 95/96 and it was getting 10l/100kms but then diesel quality has gone south since then so probably 12 to 13 would be reasonable now days bit more for its age aswell maybe.
Towing was not a problem, 5 tonne tri axel van it pulled easy after being a little patient taking off.
It was more comfy than the 110 that we had at the same time which was 200TDI yet still a defender so comfort isnt high on the list of options and it was i fender that the air con actually did something (still not a lot but did make it slightly cooler in the cabin).
Off road they are a bit long but you would get used to it, I didnt find it too bad as I was going from an F350 4wd med wheel base which needed 2 suburbs to turn around in so it was actually pretty good I thought.
Im not sure what it would be worth but depending on Kms and extras $10 to maybe $15k would be about the range I havnt seen any under $10k.

Hi there all
Thanks for the information - I will be having a look at it on Saturday evening.
But it looks like we may be able to strike a deal - can anyone give me some pointers to look for / ask.
Thanks in advance
All the best

The only thing I can think off with that era is the gearbox output shaft/transfer input shaft excessive wear problem. This is caused by a lack of oil to the splines.
If the drivetrain has lots of backlash, get this checked cos to fix means stripping the gearbox and $600 in parts minimum :(
The shaft can be inspected by removing the PTO cover, and if it hasn't had a crossdrilled shaft fitted, or splash plate fitted, this will definitely be a problem.
Good luck with it.
Bruce.

Hi there all
Well I had a look at the vehicle tonight - and I have some questions for the forum:
1. It has an oil leak looks to be comming from the front of the engine - and sprays down the turbo side.
2. Water leak - looks to be comming from the seal between the cast block and the alloy front housing.
Can anyone had simular issues.
Thanks in advance

1.is the oil leak low down on the engine ,if so could possibly be a crankshaft seal!
2.sounds like the p gasket if you do a search you should find out more info on that.
both of these jobs (i believe) require the removal of the timing belt so you might want to consider replacing this at the same time!(hope this was some help)

I can't help with the oil pattern you are talking about but they are notorious for breaking the manifold gaket at no 2&3 inlets, this leads to oil in the valley between rocker cover and inlet manifold (lift the rubber cover) and down that side of the engine.
Easy fix, new gasket cut in the right places.
you can pm me for further on that if needed.
Stick a piece of bent wire up the drain hole in the timing belt cover and see if you can get any black fibres out. This is a sure sign of timing belt wear.
If you do buy it and replace the timing belt consider making a small hole in the front cover up the top between the air con compressor mount and the engine so you can shine a torch in and inspect the belt for wear. Peace of mind makes the hole very worth while! Again pm me if you want a pic of that.
As for towing, I once towed an XW falcon on a heavy car trailer from Bathurst to Orange and did 100 all the way except for "The Rocks" but I did that at 80 and it slows me down to about 90 when empty and not towing anyway.
Hope this helps a little,
Steve.

1stly, what has this got to do with the thread?
Yes I have had some jobs, I had that job for nearly 2 years, delivering, repairing caravans for a company which also built canopies and roof racks which I also did when the deliverys and repairs were quiet.
It was called Lowline and I left because the pay was crap at that time.
My previous job to this one I had for 8 1/2 years repairing golf course equipment on site and before that Id been a courier driver for about 18 months with bits and pieces in between including going back to run a ski hire im Merrijig for a season.
At one stage when we first bought our first house I was working 4 jobs, my main job during the week, then thurs, fri, sat and sun nights in a Pizza shop in Boronia, a mates tyre joint on saturday mornings for 7 years and helped another mate out most sundays for 18 months driving a tipper for his garden supplies.
This is one of the reasons I have slowed down a lot since I got this heart condition, you can only work like that for so long before your body says no more when you dont look after yourself properly as well.
When I moved down here Steve, I said I wasnt going back with my tail between my legs like most of my mates did and I havnt, I dont rely on anyone to give me anything and eveything I have I have earned the money for (except the house is mortgaged).
Does that explain it.
