no. the picture is a bit misleading, the wheels are flush with the outside of the guards so i'll be leaving them as is.

Great Colour... very G4! I like it. I'd be tempted painting mine the same... but you live in Perth as well... I don't wanna be driving your copy 'round!!! ;)

I do want to get a roll cage tho, and your post got me thinking - do you have one already, ordering one from the UK, or are you getting one built? Cos if its either of the latter two, I'd be keen on a group buy / build.

thanks mcrover, there's a few bit's that i'm not that happy with but should be easy enough to rectify.
needed advice as this was only the second time i done it and first time i stuffed up, so wanted to cover all my bases.

that colour looks pretty much exactly the same as tangiers - and a cracking job to boot. bet that paint was a bit cheaper tho :(.

o.k. heres a couple more pics of the county.
progress been a bit slow lately, but it's moving in the right direction.
all the orange flecks on the black are just from the plastic sheeting and will dust off.
the front end is pretty much complete now and all the orange done except for the vents which i will hopefully cut-out next week sometime.

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/4445/county005kf1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

the tub i've painted with black rust inhibitor but will all be black chequer plate when finished. all the rear glass is in place - just the windscreen to go

http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/2476/countyfj8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/2476/countyfj8.d86219152b.jpg (http://g.imageshack.us/g.php?h=526&i=countyfj8.jpg)

i get the gearbox back on tuesday ( they been saying that for the last 2 weeks but this time they promised ;) )
so i'll get that in and get it out side for a good wash down and a polish, before starting on the interior.
i'm leaving the back seat out and am making a cage for the dog on a false floor which will have deep drawers under and a fridge slide on the other side together with a fair bit of usable storage space. i'm hoping to be able to mount some kind of air con up in the rear roof but don't have a clue as to what's available or how to do it as of yet so if anyone has any ideas let's have em.
the back looks a different colour in the pics but it's just the light and/or camera the actual colour is more like the top pic.

will take pictures of how the ute part is done when i get on to the interior.

That colour is called Moly Orange and from the photo's looks damn close and that was done in Acrylic, 3 coats of colour and about 7 coats of clear (covers up all the mistakes) and ive been a bit lazy, I still havnt cut it and polished it yet and that was about 3 months ago.

Ive got the schematics for some Jacobsen stickers at work which would look great along the sides of the county with a nice Jacobsen in 2" white lettering across the bonnet and your stickering is done :D

i wouldn't mind the dragon on the back , though not sure it'd come up good on chequer plate.
as for the rest of the stickers from all, i think i've got it covered. ;) just waiting on my delivery.
i'll take some side pics hopefully thurs/fri when i've got the box back in and i'll roll it out and do them then as it's a bit heavy pushing it back up the drive and into the garage.

a few more pics of the county, painting still ALMOST complete. I'm happy with the drivers side and back, but need to do both doors on the passenger side again particulary the rear which doesn't look too bad in the photo's but is quite bad close up. once all the painting is complete and i'm happy with it i'll spend a day buffing/cutting and getting all the paint up to scratch.

yes very bright but once every thing is fitted along with the external cage which will be black

Have you checked to see if external roll cages are legal ? I just phoned up the DPI cause I want one as well and they reckon that you can only have them registered with an external roll cage if its registered as a rally car, and you can only use it on road in between events...

Unless this is going to be a rally car ?

Nice car by the way :)

Depends if you call it a "roll cage" or a "ladder rack" ;)
Ladder racks are fine and legal AFAIK (well they are in QLD at least)

Roll Over protection devices are legal in WA, see construction and installation guidelines here (http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/lic_CP-101A.pdf)

My understanding is that the two main concerns with ROPD are passenger and pedestrian safety.

The former is concerned with potentially intervening objects in passenger headspace (i.e. for internal roll cages) in collision situations. The latter is concerned with pedestrian safety. I've discussed the latter with 2 different DPI tech staff, both confirming that so long as the ROPD doesn't "significantly" protrude outside the vehicle envelope, it is deemed OK. Which they agree, for a Deefer, is not an issue. For a disco?? - I'd confirm it with the DPI prior to sinking the dosh for a cage.

that document says it's illegal if fitted after Dec 05.

Looking good so far Taff...........

Yeah,

that, or something seemingly to that effect... seemingly being the key word! ;)

The exact wording of the document is:

"Note:After 31st December 2005, all passengers must travel in compartments of a vehicle specifically designed for that purpose, ie passengers will no longer be allowed to travel in a load space equipped with a Roll-Over Protection Device designed and constructed to these guidelines."

The document says that from December 2005, passengers will not be allowed to travel in load spaces (such as at the back of a ute), even if they are fitted with ROPD.

However, it says nothing about prohibiting the fitting of a ROPD after December 2005.

It was the document I was referred to by the DPI staff when I enquired about constructing a roll over protection device. Note that I didn't enquire about a "roll cage". In fact, I went to great lengths to explain that the Defender has very little in the way of safety when turned over on its roof, and is very prone to crushing. I also explained that I was concerned about my safety, given that its a short wheelbase 4WD, relatively high CG, solid axles, making it not the most stable vehicle on the road etc etc... I was very careful not to mention the word racing... because the first "roll cages" that come to the mind are racing ones with just enough space for the driver to get in, and the res of the interior space interwoven with metal bars. You know, the type where you get in through the window. :)

In any case, it would be allowed so long as it followed the linked guidelines and it had an engineering certificate, stamped visibly on the "device".

That was the information I was given. However, I'd encourage anyone considering one to enquire for themselves.

Cheers

Bojan

****ing el nige i thought you'd fallen off the end of the earth - how's the job going butt?

andy sorry mate but didn't get the part from your butty, my comp crashed b4 chrissy and i lost all my info, so my parents brought a dash over from the u.k. for me at new year.

got me some lights

tried to take some pics of where cage goes under guard

http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/8962/county011pv5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

you can just see the tube in the first pic coming down on the left. if you look at the second pic you can see some plate welded onto the step, this is also welded onto the outrigger that you can see in the first pic and then obviously the cage is welded to that. on the back there are three base points on on each side box directly above an existing steel braced point and one in the middle (pictured) also bolted to a steel brace. i'll post the rest of the pics tomorrow as they take ages to upoad.
also got a wolf mangement system coming (birthday pressie) for the 3.9 thats going in and currently in the process of insulating the inside, which i copied off another thread on here (lr hybrid 100 - i think) and got some rubber backed marine carpet to top it off - hopefully be able to hear the stereo now.
will post more pics as i'm progressing

few more pics
first one is of how the dual cab has been done from the inside and as it is at the moment.
i've done away with the back seats and am going to build a box to house battery's no. 2 & 3 (which will be run off an independant split charge.) along with a few speakers and some storage.

the following pictures are where i've started the insulation of the front end using the same foil backed foam as another thread on here and then topped it off with rubber backed marine carpet

i've not used it myself yet, it was a non runner when i got it at the start of summer and decided to just crack on and get it all done. i'm itching to get out in it, and it'll all be done before the rain comes.
