Firstly, I should say I'm trying to assess a vehicle (my first LR) without seeing it :(
I'm not sure the owner knows, but how can I know if a 1999 Discovery 2 has ACE fitted? or how can they tell me?

Look under the hood the ACE fluid bottle should be right next to the power steering fluid bottle and the one closest to the front should say power steering and the one next to it should say ACE if it has ACE.

There is also a hydraulic ram under the driver front wheel arch at the front, and also a big aluminium looking block with pipes coming out of it everywhere under the drivers side sill, hanging off the side of the chassis.

Hi Shanep
As AK says, ask them to look at the power steer bottle.
Its a single unit,but has a double compartment.It has 2 lids,non ACE vehicles only have 1 lid.
As Slunnie said get them to look behind the drivers front wheel, the hydraulic ram is quite easy to spot.

Is it a really big deal if the vehicle doesn't have ACE? The D2 will just drive like any other 4wd, generally speaking, right?

I cant speak from experiance as i own a fender but i would probably rather not have it. Just another thing to go wrong.

The ACE gives a little more articulation off-road,but the best is the on road handling, you can push them pretty hard around bends/roundabouts.
Even the handbrake picked up on it when we got the Rangie for her,she said it doesnt feel safe around roundabouts(we have a couple in town).
I asked her just how fast has she been punting my D2 around them:D:D:D:D

By just looking at the power steering reservoir, you can't necessarily tell if there is ACE or not.
The Series 2A V8 Disco has a power steering reservoir but does NOT have the 2nd cap for ACE. You can do as previously mentioned and check for the hydraulic ram on the drivers side, look for the ACE pump, or watch if there is a ACE light that does a self test when starting the vehicle.
Cheers.

This would be it here in the first photo?

This is the only photo I received from under a wheel arch.

the shot showing the power steering and ACE fluid bottle, it looks like it has ACE - i.e 2 filler caps and 2nd one seems to have the little tilting car icon on it indicating its the ACE reservoir

BTW the ace light icon thing on the start up test, its a little car icon with 2 curved arrows pointing across and curving down on either side of it, it will appear for a few seconds when you first turn the key

What blue thing?
Only 1 brake line, the other is the ABS line.
All said, judging by the res bottle under the bonnet, it does have ACE.

Thats the fuel filter. It's mounted pretty solidly and generally doesn't get knocked - but I have done it. :(

Oh, ok then, I'm learning this as I go. So that will mean no airbags = no SLS?
Pedro_The_Swift

no SLS.
the ACE may or may not make noises,,
I know mines there, but it doesnt increase in noise at all while driving,
from what i read, there were a few replaced under warranty
due to the noise alone and a few more that just plain fail each year.
It is only the people that dont have ACE that say bad things about it.

Other than an adjustable extra 1-2 inches to increase the departure angle and helping with towing, would I miss it?
Can I retro fit SLS? or just upgrade the rear suspension?

Thats funny Shane,,
all I ever hear around this place is people wanting to dum cars down---
I suppose its possible,, lots of bits to add though:eek:,,
The rides better on road, it will adjust to
different loads in the car and on the towbar, they are probably more supceptable to damage off road,, but work as good as coils,, and yes you can get ones with better travel.

I've got more funny (read dumb) questions. Missus wanted to know if is possible to add just 1 of the 3rd row seats to a 5 seater, so that we can install a fridge in the other half?
I better get to work :(

physically yes,
legally and morally??
probably not.
not sure I'd want a fridge inside the human compartment,
and as all 7 seaters came with different suspension,, dunno,,
anyone??

I have heard of people installing the extra seats into 5 seaters i dont think it would really matter if you only put in one, but no doubt you would need to get a mod plate/engineers certificate as its an after purchase add on. As for the suspension, the SLS in the 7 seaters is probobly to help keep the back end up to height when you have a couple of people of the "rounder" type in the back :BigThumb:
