Are we talking V8 petrol or the new V8 diesel 200 series??
If petrol I have not heard any bad reports about these and have driven a few. They are and I know its blasphemy a nice vehicle to drive, so much better than the diesel slug (100 series).
Have not heard of any popping engines down this way.

New V8 70series, I've heard of 3, 2 stoppages and 1 dead motor
As much as I dont like the wayne kerr 1 eyed opinion of either Land rover OR toyota owners, I know one of my old man's work mates hunting party, have BACKTRADED there V8 70 series, on a 79 series 1HT-FTE, which are fantastic motors

and people are still having problems with the 3lt Nissan engine.
Anything on any of the other forums ?
I really only visit here and Outerlimits these days.

I have heard of this too - read it on one of the 4x4 forums a month or so ago. But no further information - presumably Toyota fixed it up quickly and quietly to stop negative press from getting out. It'll be the single turbo V8 as employed in the old new 76 series 4 door wagon and the new Troopie, but not the twin turbo motor, as that is only just out in the 200 Series Cruiser.

I was told by a local cocky that the new V8 diesel is a converted petrol motor and that he knew some who'd had troubles.
(Please note: I cannot vouch for the veracity of this version of the motor's origins as I am not versed in the engineering aspects of such - 'Tis merely heresay I am more than happy to circulate:D)

Toyotas don't break down in fact they don't even wear out thats why there are so many 30 year old Toyotas around it is also why you NEVER see an old Land Rover on the road.
Oh Pig just flew past was distracted by the noise.

Maybe they could also detonate the new old new old '70s series, what a joke that is...
I believe the brief at the Toyota international marketing department went somethiing like this:
Japan: "We've got several million 70s series bodies from the late 1980s, but the Pacific Islanders don't want them...nor do the Africans"
Aust: "Easy fixed, drop in a V8, double the price and we'll flog 'em to those dyed in the wool Aussies who reckon our stuff is the best... suckers.":twisted::twisted:

I dunno about a slug, here's the stats on both
Twin Turbo Diesel :195kW of power/650 Nm Torque
Petrol : 202kW/410 Nm
The diesel gets 11.5 l/100km too.

This is dependent on the engine actually working:D:D:D
I read of some discussion about Toyotas 'power' claims, not so much to do with these donks, but about the supposed 200kw claimed in some of the smaller cars, like RAV and Aurion - it was a few months ago, from my distant memory the claims were 'optimistic', apparently
...be nice to have a donk with 650nms, very grunty!

Non turbo slug, I should have said. The turbos are ok, but only ok, still not great.

Yea, whats a Defender then??:bangin:

I used to think that a Defender is a very high priced piece of old bodywork with new engine.
But I think Toyota saw what Land Rover was doing, and decided to copy the idea.
So now we have two old body vehicles sold in Australia with new engines in them.
For $50K, you get a Defender 4 door wagon with a 2.4 litre 4 cylinder turbo diesel.
For $60K, you get a 76 Series 4 door wagon with a 4.5 litre V8 turbo diesel.
So for the extra $10K you get consistent build quality, a dealer network spanning most parts of Australia and a gruntier motor.
I think for $60K odd, I'd buy a used D3 TDV6. :p

Very good, rovercare!
..but with a 'fender you get many types of aircon, (like in dash and under door:D),
...a cute little diesel donk from a transit van,
and a thousand years of history and numerous DVDs demonstrating the submariner abilities of the drivers and their LR carriages...:D
...while having some fun on events like the Camel Trophy:D
I think the point of difference is in the advertising relative to brand; Toyota push the current 70 series as newer, (a classic case of advertisings use of weasel words: newer than what?) whereas LandRover don't try and pass off the 'fender in the same way...
$49k for a new 'fender is also about $12k less than the 'yota 70 equivalent... aircon is still an option on the T70 wagon...
Toyotas website also has some curious figures re 'power'
ENGINE
Engine type
Diesel
Engine capacity (cc)
4461
Engine description
8cyl/DOHC/4v
Forced induction system
Turbo
Maximum Power
151kW @ 3400rpm
Maximum Torque

no 650nms stated here

I think you'll find the 650 of Mr Isaac Newton's per metre are for the twin turbo jobby in the 200 Series wagon.
How many gearboxes, t/cases and diffs do we all reckon would be grenaded with 650Nm in a 79 series ute or 76 series wagon ?

yep, particularly like the virus one !
apparently the engine oil sludge that has plagued US Toyota's (and a few Chryslers and VW's too) is related to engine oil pooling (not draining properly) in cylinder heads and becoming heat soaked/superheated after shutdown. People I've talked to in the US point a fairly strong finger at low quality oil. Quite a lot were inadequate servicing too.

There's now quiet a few LC 70's getting around up here. So far I haven't heard of any problems with the engine but the way these will get flogged will make for some interesting feedback. Certainly not as bad as the 100 series when it first came out bits fell off them everywhere (especially the spare tyre!)

I know power sell's but how much do you need? What do people tow where you need 650 nm of torque? For me I'd rather have fuel economy and long service intervals than power I don't use or need.I think they are kidding themselves that the diesel will get 10 ltrs per hundred and the V8 14. Pat

This thread is only dealing with the engine that may be broken. What about the styling of the 76 series that is stuffed to buggery! Talk about cocking up an arguably classic design. It WAS a close third behind the Defender and Jeep Wrangler IMHO.

And the fact that the front track is wider than the rear track!!
Another rumour is that it is causing some stability problems on loose gravel.

Well the 70 series wagon is just an early 90's prado body from overseas anyway, so it technically is new australia

When I was working on the farm the cocky bought a new pootrol trayback, front coils rear leaf.
Compared to the tojo ute we had it handled the road real well, gravel was a big problem, bordering on dangerous. It too had a significantly wider front track to rear, like 3/4 of an inch or more!!!!!
Still a mutch nicer ute than the tojo.

Much as I hate to say it, if there are issues, Toyota will sort them out in production very quickly. Land Rover on the other hand........

Its always good to see ONE other, non-biased person about, there is alot to be said, about Tojo's warranty claims...they're ****ing excellent;)
I work with 2, 7 years plus Toyota/Nissan mech's and can assure you, Tojo problems, simply get sorted...Pronto:cool:
Nissan on the other hand, are a little more resiliant:(, unless of course it was a ZD30:D
