View Full Version : EGT gauge fitting to 300TDi

Hi all,
I am fitting an Exhaust Gas Temperature gauge to my 99 300TDi Defender. There is a neat looking little plate at the top of the exhaust manifold that looks like a good place to put the sensor. Am I right in that?
The two bolts that hold the plate on look very welded in by years of heat. Are they likely to break when I try to undo them? Is it best to get the engine hot before trying to remove them?
The plate itself looks a bit thin to weld the threaded boss for the sensor onto. What is the general opinion of that? Would it be better to have a new plate made up in thicker material so that a thread can be tapped into the plate rather than welding on the threaded boss?
As always, very grateful for all advice.
Cheers,
Paul

i fitted one a while ago
i gave the bolts a bit of a spray, left it for an hour or so and they came out no problems
the plate on mine was 4mm or maybe 5mm thick, plenty of meat there to tap a thread
the hole under the plate goes off at an angle of somewhere between 30-45 degrees so your standard probe will only sit at the end of the hole and not in the exhaust gas stream, i don't think this will effect your readings
it will give you piece of mind......when towing the caravan i have had to back off twice when the temps edged 600's, i understand i can let it go higher but i'm never in a rush when heading off camping no need to push the temps

Yep, mount it there - I would. Either drill the existing plate our make up a new one.
FYI - That plate is a blanking plate for where the EGR valve would be mounted if you had one on your truck.

I tried a shorter thermocouple but it wasn't as accurate so you can see the one I used here. You need to bend it slightly to get it in the middle of the gas flow.
This photo is of a temporary plate because I was testing two thermocouples. I then drilled/tapped the plate that was on the Exhaust Gas Return hole. The bolts undid quite easily (I too was concerned about snapping them) - sprayed WD40 and left it for a while to soak. No problem.

Why do you need to fit one?Is this for a tuned up engine or standard? Pat

I had my injector pump adjusted to increase the fuel delivery. It is possible to turn the pistons to toothpaste if I keep my foot planted too long on big long hills. So EGT Guage gives me an excellent way to adjust my driving style - the feedback is almost instantaneous - worth every cent.

same here, tweaked fuel pump, i wish i had fitted the egt gauge prior to the tweak so that i knew the before and after difference's

Thanks everyone for the replies.
I plan to have a dieselgas system installed, and want to see the before and after EGT's. Definitely don't want my pistons turned to toothpaste!!
Has anyone here had a dieselgas system fitted?
BTW, I nearly bought another 300TDi the other day.....976,000 k's on the clock! It had had head work, but otherwise the block was untouched. Just shows how bloody wonderful these engnes are if looked after and well maintained.

Paul

I have diesel/gas installed there is no problems so far. The setting up is important mine was originally set for 30% lpg gave heaps more power but I wasn't too comfortable with the fuel knock backed it off to 20% I am much happier power is not as much fun though.:D

Hmmm, that fuel knock would worry me too. Would you say it is completely absent at 20%?
Did the dieselgas installer have anything to say about the fuel knock?

Can someone get some photo's to show the set-up.is the tune up just the stop screw or have you advanced the pump? Pat

Do a search on "300tdi pump tweek"
It will tell you everything.. even how to turn your loved 300 into a ashtray..

Hi Ralph,
Could you tell me please where you obtained your long thermocouple? I have lost mine - %&#@$#$ - so as I need to get one anyway, may as well get a long one!

stock fuelling tops 623*C
a safe maximum is 720*C. I've hit 735* a few times for a couple of seconds when not paying attention.....

try Ian at Thermoguard. ThermoGuard Instruments (http://www.thermoguard.com.au)
Ian's a member on here and makes kits specifically for the 300tdi.

Pat, I posted the link to Ian's write-up on how to adjust the pump after you asked on one of the recent pump tuning threads in the last couple of weeks.
It's a PDF file here on AULRO complete with pictures and what each adjustment does in terms of fuel delivery.
Well worth the read.

Excellent idea Ralph! you can never have too many gauges IMO...besides,they do a great job in stopping aircraft blowing mega $$$ worth of turbines!!
