Fit electric fans to my radiator but how?

Hi All

I have a couple of electric fans around 10-12 inches, (never measured them) and was deliberating over putting them on my RRC.

The thing is they don't have any sort of mounting holes, which isn't really a bid deal as I can weld something onto the fan shroud but whats a good way to mount them to the radiator?

I thought about lots of cable ties but I think that would be a bad idea.
I also saw someone who mounted them to plywood and mounted that to the body behind the radiator.

Any other ideas neither if these seem very appealing.

someone did something like this and wrote it up a while back. ( on a disco but should be simliar.)
maybe do a search - I think they made some adaptor plates out of aluminium sheet.

The easiest would be to use the ford EL to AU twin fans with matching shroud that i believe is pretty much the same size as a rangie/ disco radiator.

The best way is, as "loanrangie" says.

However, you can buy zip lock plastic rods that normally come with Davis Craig fans.
They enable you to lock the fan straight onto the radiator core.

The down side is they only cool the spot where the fans are.
That is why the AU fans with shroud is a better idea. I have fitted that system on both Jaguars with excellent results.

I followed that thread closely he made his own tabs and had to weld the radiator to attach fixings.
My welding aint great and would rather not weld the rad directly.
I know the AU fans are better but these fans were, (almost) free and my income isn't exactly bursting at the seams at the moment.

Now there's an idea, I might try and make up a new shroud from tin or aluminum fasten the fans to that and fasten that to the body :D

I suggest you price a shroud from say ford or go to a wrecker and look around.
I recall about 10 years ago I bought one for my Porsche 924 turbo and it was only $125.
They should be cheap, and much easier than trying to bend metal in different directions.

I used twin Kenlow Fans on my 130 but ended up removing them because they still didn't do the job as well as a viscous fan and a decent shroud.

Fans fixed directly to the radiator have alot of 'dead spots' which don't have any cooling effect. Even the center of the fan rotor is classed as a dead spot because it has no blades to suck the air through the rad.
You will loose approx 30% of your effective cooling area with fans attached directly to the rads fins. I have an aluminium radiator which has much better heat dissipating qualities than the copper/brass rads...but still the twin electrics didn't cope with harsh heat build up.

The next thing I did was to stand the fans 2 inches away from the rads surface by means of a shroud.... a bit like a shoe box lid. This helped alot but it was never as good as the viscous fan and properly fitting shround that is available for the V8 engine.
This is the only pic I can find of the twin fans shroud...but you get the idea.

hmmmm maybe I'll stick with the viscous & shroud for now and see how it goes this summer.

Ive got a 16 in davies craig mounted to brackets at the top and bottom of the rad and its great the brackets are in the rad i used as it had them for mounting the original shroud tho this rad had the twin AU jobbies and they lasted about 3 trips and carked due to water/mud ingress if you drive through these sorta things stay away from the ford ones as i found that the electric motors arnt sealed like the davies craig and lost there puff and one stoped compleetly ......:D:D:D
