View Full Version : Convoy procedure - last car etiquette

Just curious as to what the "last car" procedure is when passing another group of vehicles.

I was out by myself (and bub) on Sunday exploring a few firetrails & I came across a few motorbikes coming the opposite way.
I signalled "1", trying to indicate that I was by myself.

Is this right ?
Or should I be indicating "0" for no more cars after me ?

Was the "1" indicated with the palm of the hand facing towards you or away from you ?

I find it makes quite a bit of difference to the response :D

I would have gone 0 for zero cars :D

I didn't know you could have a convoy of 1 :D

I would have done nothing unless they asked or you were both going very slow when passing.
If they shot passed you I doubt they would have seen you do anything anyway.

There was this Wrangler on Moreton last weekend, full of bodies and going fast, my mate in front called it to me and relayed his son's comment that "he's a bit of a [adjective]". We were all spaced apart 100m or so and when he reached me he was again racing along waaaay too quick for a tight two way track:mad:, it really took some stopping and got out of shape on him:o.
I just sat in the track and calmly waited, I was on holiday afterall:D. After some considerable effort he pulled into the bay (tyres looked hard too). I went past nice & steady and called "4 more mate" with a big cheery grin.

Oops my bad, there were only 3 behind me.

I'd take any number you signalled as the number of vehicles behind you, since your vehicle is a given :)

'O' would be the go. but if it was the TLCC it wouldn't make any difference, they slow down for no one and usually run you off the road anyway

You'd need another pinky to indicate the number of vehicles to him ;)

It depends on how they are riding, If they pull over or atleast make it easy for you to pass then you tell them the truth but if they are being idiots, I tell them nothing.

On a number of occasions I have alerted motor bike riders of how many in the convoy but they completely ignor me anything as the next thing I hear on the radio is "Explicit....Where the hell did he come from" and thats before I have even got to the mic to warn the rest of the group.

Im sure there are some responsible motor bike riders out there and I have met a few but most I have come across in high country vic are just simple hoons on unrego'd bikes and most wouldnt know what a licence was or safety gear in some cases.

E.g. the fantastically smart bloke who took off from Frys flat following us out, narrow road, drop off on the right and 3' high cutting on the left and he then rides between the cutting and my mates patrol and my disco where we both dropped wheels off the edge as to not have him wedge himself into the side of the road and our cars.

Even his mates then road passed a little later where the road widened shaking their heads.

He was also in runners, shorts, T shirt but did have a helmet on.

That has to be the worst Ive had though.

which finger you use to indicate 1 also makes a difference :D same applies if indicating 2 :D

Come to think of it, O or 0 might be misunderstood if the hand is held at an angle :D

It's all to confusing now - I'll just make a "Last car" or "Only 1 car" sign & wave it as I pass someone :p.
