Has anyone fitted temperature gauges to an LT85 & LT230? Mine will be coming out for overhaul and I might as well fit senders to them whilst out. I will be using Chicago Airguide gauges. The senders are 1/4" NPT thread. Any suggestions as where to place them? Prefer not to drill and tap the housing if avoidable so probably will have to make new filler plugs with an NPT thread in them for the sender. Any other suggestions?

I run an engin oil temp gauge tho one for the gearbox would be handy ....
Id say it would need to be in constant contact with the oil to give the best readings and if you put them in the filler plugs i doubt it will be as effective as if it were in through the drain plug which would be in contact with the oil all the time .....

The project County I am working on has em all over the place, front/rear diffs transfer & gearbox:eek:. They are all mounted via the plugs. I can send pics if you like. in fact have a gander at the dash.

 bloody hell ! there are more gauges there than an aircraft cockpit !
It's been a few years since I flew, (I just worked out nearly twenty  ) and it wasn't for very long, but I reckon all you need now is an altimeter, air speed indicator and balance/yaw indicator and you're complete :D

And a Scarff ring and Lewis gun for the Observer?

Maybe an artificial horizen so he knows when he is upside down.

There is a real problem with the mounting of those gauges! The bevels have them pointing the wrong way and the flight engineer will have difficulty reading them. ;)

Addit: Is there a gauge to monitor the gauges?

I had thought about going to that extreme. Decided it would be to hard to keep an eye on them all.

The LT230 on my 96 Disco already has a tapped hole for a sender. Some depending on the age came with threaded holes for a sender that connected to the over temp idiot light on the dash. If you have a warning light on your dash you most likely have the capability for the sender without having to tap into the transfer box, don't know about the manual box as I have an Auto

Does anybody know what temps to expect for engine and manual transmission oils. eg normal running, towing and 4X4 running?

I have a gauge I will be putting in mine one day;).
It appears to have the idiot light for the transmission and the gauge I think is mounted where the line for the oil cooler comes out.
I am planning on just adding another gauge in the same spot with a T piece and adaptors.

97discotdi.

The previous owner never mentioned actual temps, but he did say the rear got hotter on the tarmac and it was the other way round when 4wd'ing, it was the front that got hotter.
Cheers, David

I'm not sure that I want to know - what I do know is that my LT95 gets VERY hot. I think a gauge will tell me what I already know................
Having said that, it would be nice to have a gauge.

An auto tranmission is the first driveline component I'd be sticking a gauge on.

I have bought a digital temperature gauge to fit to my ZFauto, hopefully can tap out the drain plug or is there somewhere else to fit the sender? Was going to see what the normal temp was, then add on say 10 degrees to alarm actuation.Gauge came from www.sig.itel.net
