After reading Ace's excellent post on the journos with the new Defenders it set me thinking (which many would argue that is cause to reach for Valium or Advil).

Allow me to digress here... wasn't that a fantastic thread of Ace's - pictures that satisfied a multitude of our curiosities and a well written, factual report to boot.

And, as I have a Tullamore Dew in hand I can digress further... whoever is responsible, or partly responsible for Ron's self-imposed sabatical I hope you have wooden legs and get caught in a bushfire. It is/was comfortable knowing Ron was there to correct spelling and grammar.

Anyways... I woke up in a cold sweat....the nightmare was real....the Defender had won 4WD of the Year.:o

Fantastic you say.:eek::eek::eek:

Hell no.:twisted::twisted::twisted: This was hell.:twisted::twisted:

In my nightmare I saw Metro-sexuals driving Defenders - now I had best type that again... I saw Metro-sexuals driving Defenders.

Now do you believe me when I say I was having a nightmare.:(

Yeah, and I know I make Pat303's day just because I drive a Defender - in a collar and tie - but he and I need to discuss that over a a beer next Easter in Cooma.

Then, in my nightmare I saw Soccer-Mums dropping-off Little Johnny - in a Defender..... and all of this as a result of the 4WD of the Year Award.

Damn... Non-Land Rover people were driving Defenders..... we know there are Non-Land Rover People driving Discovery's.... but a Defender!!!!!!:mad::mad:

Think about it - a "cool" black 130 - lowered (yes lowered!!!!!!) with 24 inch wheels and low profiles...........winch, chrome hi-lift jack.....and you question my nightmare???

My nightmare went further....allow me to re-cap.... Defender = 4WD of the Year = Metro-sexuals driving Defenders (and fitting every conceivable extra - including automatic Latte coffee machines) and Soccer-Mums vehicle of choice - a true nightmare indeed...........a Land Rover wave? Yeah... the best one could hope for is a slightly cocked fifth digit to indicate the Verdelho is chilled (yeah righto.... some would say Chardonnay but it is my story and I don't mind a Chardonnay on the boat at 4.30pm so Verdelho it is ......right!)...back to the nightmare...

It rained!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:):):):):):):):)

Thanks be The Lord.........it rained!!!!!!!!

Soccer Mums were covered in water....Metro-sexuals had the indignity of Hugo Boss suits drenched with rainwater...............whilst they were driving the 4WD of the Year.!!!!!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D

My nightmare turned to a H2O dream.......many, many, many Defenders on the market fitted with the Complete Metro-sexual Pack (including Coffee Machine) at a very cheap price.

I'm a selfish bugger.... I want the World Of Land Rover to remain but I feel we are entering the end of an era - no, the end of a legend - and it saddens me greatly.:(:(:(:(

Geez, now I feel really sick...

I don't think the metrosexual market would tolerate the 'fender, Barra1. (fortunately):D

...working a manual gearbox (or 2) could be an issue for those used to a Murano, or Touraeg etc....

Must try Tullamore Dew one day:twisted:

Never fear.

As if the Defender would win "4WD of the year" the same year Toyota bring out a brand new model Cruiser.

Toyota *love* buying those sort of awards off magazines and they are willing to pay heaps more than Land Rover ever would.

I don't think they look too bad :o. Not my cup of tea but Defenders are one of the prettiest cars on the road and it's only natural that some people will add jewellery.

As for soccer mums, bring it on. A woman driving a Defender definitely floats my boat.

What's wrong with coffee machines?

I have been known to take one camping when I'm staying somewhere with power. :D

And with no power I take the stovetop coffee maker.

Absolutely true. I love camping but bad coffee and warm beer/chardonay are never acceptable at any time or in any place.

Because Land-Rovers - particularly old ones - attract weird people, (come on, ADMIT IT!), there will always be proper Landies around. The bodies won't rust and there's always some odd bod (like me) to resurrect them.

So once the bling-blingers have had their way, and moved on, a real Landie owner can move in.

But I do really think we're at the end of an era here, and yes, that saddens me too.
