HI Guys

quick question...

i want to mount a Kayak on the roof of the disco II and wondering whats the best method...

1, should i just buy the roof bars that span and clamp to the existing rails, strapping the kayak to these

or

2, should i buy a full rack that hangs on to the gutter.. that spans the full length of the vehicle? im guessing i could use this also for a roof basket too...

the Kayak is a sit-on plastic one with an all up weight of 18kg...

please could you advise and also give me some ideas on brands / reasoning ...

Thanks once again guys

Steve

if you just use the existing roof bars you risk breaking the plastic kayak in half.
most of these long boats get broken by being carried on too short a roof. get two roof racks and spread them apart as far as the disco will allow, that way the boat will be supported nearer to its ends. its the overhang that does them in.

Dunno about a kayak but we carry a 13 ft canoe on ttop of our Disco 1. I have one of the LR "alpine" half roof racks ( I think there's one for sale on ebay ATM ). I strap the canoe down well with two ratchet straps and also run a strap from the front of the canoe to the bullbar, to stop any lifting effect.

Kayak would be lighter but I still wouldn't be using those front LR roof bars myself.

We cart our two on Rhino racks. Generally just laying them on the racks and tying them down works, but does mark them. We also have the Rhino Kayak holders which are ok, but when on their side create too much drag. The actual add on extenders are better
Kayak Carrier RXX (S508XX)

using 4 of these per canoe / kayak is better.

thanks guys....

i think the 2 racks or a cross bar plus 2 racks at the rear would work...

next question (and you knew this was coming) wheres best (read cheapest place) to get these racks...

you reckon the 4x4 show may have some good deals on them?

Thanks

Steve

Steve,

You will see them on all the ARB,OL and Southern Spirit stands as well as others. I don't know if they will be doing show specials.

You may have to shop around to get the best deal.

Just be careful with the cross bars that 'snap-in' to the (as fitted) longways roof bars...

...had a probo with the front one some years back, even tho' it was correctly located, the load was a few surfboards at speed...

partly my error in retrospect, should've tied the boards to the roofrails, not the cross bars....

I just paid about $150 per rail from ARB for scalloped Defender 210mm rhinos.
