I have a loose front left

Popped the drive plate from the CV off and it is filled with oil, for some reason I was expecting grease.

Can't get to my manual at the moment.

Is this usually an oil filled hub, or have I got a leak from the swivel (level plug in the middle so I think that is oil filled)

any one got a bearing tensioning sequence handy? (torques and tips)

Later D1's didnt run on oil they took what is called "one shot grease" its sort of a grease/oil mix that comes in a measured tube that you shoot in and forget. My 98 disco runs with oil in the swivels perfectly fine, the only downside is the d1's meant to use the one shot stuff only have a fill plug but no drain plug which is a pain in the backside but i just loosen the preloads and it runs out the bottom. If yours has a drain and a fill plug on the swivel hub then it is supposed to run oil, if it only has a fill plug then its supposed to take the one shot grease. It doesnt really mattter, but if yours is the later one it holds 350mL of oil just for reference. matt

I hope I don't need to dig into the swivel hubs just yet. Pretty sure it is just loose wheel bearings.

The wheel bearings are my current concern. Oil or grease in them? mine are oily...

What is the wheel bearing tensioning procedure?

The wheel bearings in Discoverys are all grease unless a seal has failed or someone has converted it.

I think the first nut is 6nm and the second 60nm.

So long as the oil isn't leaking past the hub seal then don't worry about it.

so, don't stress about the leak from the swivel to the wheel bearings so long as the swivel level is good as long as the wheel bearing / swivel hub system is oil tight? (no leaks at the swivel hub/ ball seal or diff to swivel hub)

So long as there are no leaks I'd just adjust the bearings and top up the swivel oil and keep Land Rovering.

I converted my front end to oil lubed bearings by removing all the seals and upgrading the hub seals with RTC3511 seals.

I was worried about the bearings so I popped out the outer one packed it nicely with lithium EP and poked some down for the inner.

the first nut I did up to 4 Nm, I don't have a tension wrench that goes to 65 Nm so I stood on some bathroom scales and made myself 25kg lighter by pushing down on a horizontal ratchet at 250mm form the socket centre, Works out in my head to about right.

Lost the rocking at the rim, steering appreciably better, still not perfect yet...

That is more technical than I do it.
I have a hub nut spanner that you put a rod through to turn.
I do up the first one with a greasy hand and do up the second one with a short slider T bar through the hub spanner ;).
I don't know if it is right but it works for me.
