View Full Version : Defender Tdi owner doesn't want a 2007 Def. Is this wrong?

I got my 1996 Defender from a mate who had it since new. It has a bonnet mount, roo bar, dual batteries, aux fuel, UHF, bilsteins, tailor made seat covers, chequer plate fender guards had 180k on the clock and is going pretty much like a train (knock on wood).

I sometimes get to dreaming of a nice dark green, white roofed 2007 model with the 6th gear and a tad more power, shiny new and crisp and owned by nobody but me. And then I think "bah, who needs it?"

My car is worth say $15000 on a good day. A new Defender is 50 something on the road and some of those options I have on my 300Tdi are not cheap. I can't even put a bonnet mount on at all.

Is it somehow immoral not to lust after a new one until your current canna go nae further? Is it not an oblication that all Land Rover lovers must want a new Defender?

Not at all, mate - I just got one because I didn't have a truck like yours. It doesn't matter which Defender you have - they're all good.:)

Not at all, I'm more than happy with my '94 Tdi Defender and have no desire to change to a newer vehicle :D

Nothing wrong with that at all, its mostly us non fender owners that lust after the shiny new beaute bells and whistles new model.

I wouldn't say it's an obligation to lust after the latest model, I mean, if we all did, and bought one, then who would even know about the Series landies  with the "geez, they're outdated aren't they" :o:(

I for one like the sound of the engine / transmission combination - however I remain unconvinced, I think it's a combination of the ventless dash, and some of the other changes. Although, it's not helped by having one of the previous type, and not wanting that to be completely outdone by the new one. :D

Nah, Land Rovers are good for life. However long that may be. :)

You can have a few holidays and do an awful lot of maintenance with the $35,000.00 difference between the new fender and your current one.

After all experience is suggesting that the new ones are not any more durable and possibly less so than the older ones.

So, unless your boss is giving you the new one, it all comes down to $35,000 for a shiny new paint job, a new dash and less money for holidays.

I get to play in the '07 Defender more than most but I still wouldn't get rid of my 110 for one. I'd consider swapping out the Freebee for an '07 90 but not the 110.

I'm with you... love mine and don't stress if i get a beauty mark or 2 on her

BUT a nice shiny pimped 2007 fender would make a nice daily driver :D

I think that you are just being silly not wanting to rush out and buy a new one. In fact I think all Defender owners should go out and buy the new model.

Then I can buy a cheap second hand Defender as the market will be flooded with them ;)

Personally I never intend to EVER buy a new car. IMHO it is just a waste of money - but that is just me. I would prefer to spend MUCH LOWER sums of money maintaining and upgrading my 110 county, which I plan to drive as long as there is oil/biofuel to run and lubricate it.

I wouldn't mind a set of rear seats from a new defender though, and the bonnet would give me much more room to fit the intercooler and turbo, but that is about it. 6-speed would be nice, but the 3.9 would probably eat it for lunch...

much the same here.
A lower first would be nice like the new six speed, but a VNT on the Tdi or a 2.8HS would overcome that and is a lot cheaper than a newbie.

And the one and only decent diff in a Rover doesn't exist any more in the new ones :p

Old isn't necessarily bad and new isn't necessarily better ;)

Nah mate stick with what you know. I look at them and some of the features (like an aircon that works) would be sort of nice but really the money is better spent elsewhere.

Well, not a waste, but def not the cheapest option. The world needs people to buy new cars so that there can be secondhand ones on the market futher down the track....

Well I'm buying new because I am a troublemaker who believes it is my God given right to be a right pain in the @rse to the dealer for three years under warranty  and I can't put a price on that kind of entertainment.

"Excuse me, but the left hand hinge on the console lid is squeaking - please replace the console... and whilst you're at it, the writing on the hubcaps is crooked, please replace and re-align all the wheels..."

Plus I'm buying for my business so the government is kicking in the GST for me ;).

A brand new Defender for $46,500 is pretty good I reckon.:p

A very good point that I had forgotten! Mine is for business too, so I guess I can claim the GST back as well.

I am picking mine up this afternoon. Just waiting for the window tinting to be done and then I can get my hands on it.

Just waiting for the window tinting to be done and then I can get my hands on it.

You know if you got the window tinting done separately then the smaller amount might be able to be classed as maintenance and therefore fully deductible :wasntme:.

...or so I've been led to believe :whistling:
