Hi All,
I notice that a few of the D3s in http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread.php't=46523
have rear-mounted spares. Are they all the same brand mounts? Where did you get them?

Thanks,

Thanks Stevo. It's a nice-looking unit.

However, I am also considering the Mitchell Bros tow hitch and it seems that they don't fit together (by 5mm or so).

Hi RichardK,
Thanks for your reply.

I'll have to see if the 4x4intelligence unit is compatible with the Mitchell Bros tow hitch.

Hi All,
Things are hotting up.

When I bought my D3 a week or so ago, I noticed that the spare was 235/70R17 (the original size) whereas the road tyres were BFG 265/70R17.

Today, I went to have the spare replaced with a BFG that I'd ordered in.

All went fine, until they tried to fit the new spare under the car. It wouldn't fit - not until we'd let the air out.

So, now I have a spare of the correct size, but need to transfer my compressor from the D1 "real quick", or I'm being a "thrill seeker".

I'm not happy with this arrangement as dust etc is likely to get into the spare, preventing a proper seal.

As I have ordered the Mitchell Bros tow hitch, I can't use the Kaymar rear wheel carrier as they don't fit together - at the moment.

The only possible alternative seems to be the 4x4intelligence rear wheel carrier, however I don't know if it will fit either.

Any advice appreciated.

RichardK uses the 4x4Intelligence rear wheel mount, whereas Arthur and I (the other two in the D3 Trips thread with carriers) use the one supplied by Opposite Lock.

Both of them fit directly to the existing rear bumper (well actually the steel chassis extension underneath it) and can be fitted by any competent DIY'er.

As to whether they'd foul the Mitchell Bro's hitch, I don't _think_ so - the clip for the carrier is fitted fairly close to the rear recovery point, but I don't think it would get in the way, as long as you fitted the wheel carrier first.

Cheers,

Gordon

Hi Gordon,
As the info comes straight from Mitchell Bros, I don't think that there is much doubt.:(

Hi Peter, did Mitchell Bros offer any alternatives or is it a case of wait and see IF someone else makes something to fit?

Hi Tim,
Apparently, they are trying to get Kaymar to change their design. I await this with interest.:p:p:p

Just mod the kaymar as required.

the changes from what Mitchells was saying are non structural.

Hi Michael,
I didn't "pick up" what the required changes were. Can you elaborate? (In retrospect, I should have said elucidate). Seeing as Ron isn't correcting me, I thought that I should do it myself.)

Best Wishes,

I think you misunderstood me. You are thinking of the Kaymar carrier. The Opposite Lock and the 4x4Intelligence carriers do _not_ use a steel bar or swap out the existing bumper. So they should not affect the fitting of the hitch.

Cheers,

Gordon

Hi Will,

I had Haggis here on Saturday and we trial fitted the hitch.

Unfortunately the hitch doesn't bolt straight up, the Kaymar bar needs some minor mods to make it fit. The Kaymar bar will need to be notched by approx 5mm to allow the hitch to slide into the OE recovery point and the bottom edge of the Kaymar bar needs to be slightly bent up to allow the 2 lower mount holes of the hitch to bolt into place. It is so close to fitting and they look like they are meant to be together.

I am approaching Kaymar to change the design of their bar to suit our tow hitch, hopefully they are open to my ideas!! https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2007/11/2.jpg

I will have some more info soon.

Thats the whole reason I got the Kaymar as I had modified my plastic bumper a few times till it was just hanging on by a thread :D, not a great look at all

Hi Jamo, Will, Haggis, Stevo & HSV,

I have, now, carefully re-read the posts in this thread. Sorry for my slackness earlier.

Also, sorry to hear about the unintentional customising.:(

Looking forward to further info.

Hi All,
I guess that the next (logical???) question is:

What size rims & tyres do you have mounted on your rear bar?

RichardK
1st December 2007, 10:26 PM
17"rims, 265 70 17 BFG AT's

Have fitted Cooper ST to my D3 - 245 70R 17. An excellent fit to the Kaymar rear tyre carrier.

Hi Gordon,
You are right, my fingers are working ahead of my brain at the moment.:(

I guess that, now that I'm committed to the Mitchell Bros hitch, I might have to come & visit each of you and see if your wheel carrier is compatible.:twisted::twisted:

Be AFRAID, be VERY AFRAID.

Hi Bushwanderer, have a look at the installation pics min my gallery, it will show clearly how the 4x4 intelligence unit fits up.

Unfortunately Stevo, it's the Kaymar I modified:eek::eek::eek:. Ohhhh...........bummer . Must have been a hell of a whack to modify the bar as it seems very strong. I have a couple of slight dents underneath from some nasty rocks from a recent trip. Had it been the whole bumper, it would have most likely been ripped clean off. I so much prefer the look with the wheel carrier though, I think it looks "horn" :D

Howdy!
Do you guys in Oz not use the factory supplied towbars? I'm reading a lot about 'Mitchel' towbars. I suspect they ain't 1 in the same:cool:
All D3s here that have towbars seem to be using genuines.

I'm not going LR because they seem to be plows (destroying rear departure angle).
