I think the inlet manifold is on the wrong side for either the 4BD1 or 4BD1T, it looks like the 3.5 Mazda or a Perkins.

No - manifolds are on the right sides for a 4BD1, but as blknight says there are other Isuzus that look very similar. Can't be certain it is an Isuzu, but it certainly has that "look" about it.

no that crank case breather on the passangers side and the dipstick location just screams Isuzu to me but the intake manifold and tracting just isnt gelling with me. that said theres a shipload of different manifolds that can be pressed into service for both engine.

Sorry, I was going by memory and I haven't seen one in a while.

Is an Isuzu, says so on the rockercover. Agree as to weather it's the 3.9, the glow plug connecting plate is also different. The 4BB1 were almost a spitting image of the 4BD1, they also had different manifold and had the distributer type FIP. Check the LH side of the block down low and it'll tell you exactly what beast it is. The FIP is the big give away though.

:twobeers:

well... If it is the 4BD1 Isuzu, I have a guy hanging on to an R380(unsure???) 5 speed ready to bolt up to it. currently running standard sIII box and fairey o/drive.

is the 4BB1 the smaller brother to the 4BD1?

All Looks identical to mine (4BD1)but I have an acoustic cover. (Ex 1988 110)

It will have the engine designation written on the passenger side of the block at the bottom. In big letters.

3.6L methinks for the 4BB1.
Superceeded by the 4BE1 which is also 3.6L with a rotary fuel pump.

The 3.3L is a 4BC2 which has the same rocker cover as the 4BD1's.

G'day All, As Justinc said it just hasn't got the 'Silencer Kit' on the rocker cover, it sure looks like an early type as fitted to some Series 3 Stage 1's, but the real proof will be the number/letters cast on the side of the block. I'd bet it's a noisey beast without that 'Silencer', cheers Dennis:wasntme:

Thanks v much all. I am going out west to look at vehicles in couple of weeks. I will post some decent pics then and am sure I will have more questions... The blokes at the landy parts place i shop at were convinced it was a 4bd1, but they only had the same pic i put on here... which would be the better box...LT95 or 5 speed out of a defender (R380??)?

the choice of box will depend on what you want to do with it..

If its going to be a tractor the 95 is your box of choice. If its not going to work hard but do a lot of miles and lightly loaded cross country then the R380 is your choice.

having said that the R380 in big red is still doing good things after a lot of not so nice work.

I've never seen a 4BD1 with an aluminium rocker cover, I spent a little time hunting for one before giving up. But previous engines which share a lot of parts occasionally have them.
Someone once mentioned a QD100 isuzu industrial engine.

G'day All, I'm certain that if you took off the silencer, the alloy rocker cover will be there, well it is on my 1984 110 Isuzu County or dont you own one? to check, cheers Dennis
When you remove the oil filler cap you can see the alloy cover under it.

My JDM engine is steel underneath and I think it's 86 model year.
Pull off the breather hose and see if it's a steel or alloy pipe. That pipe is the same material as the cover underneath.

It looks like that engine has a throttled air intake. That means it's earlier than the 4B series.

4BB1 is an old 3.6 L - was supersceded by the 4BE1 (also 3.6 L - but more power and torque than a 4BD1) because it was known for breaking cranks in trucks.

There is also a 4BA1 (2.8) and 4BC1 (3.3)

dip stick comes out

A 2.8 non turbo isn't anything to write home about. But with a turbo added it'd be quite good.
